How do I build a secure fence without going overboard?

There is an advantage to having a small run anyway in case you go on vacation- the chicken sitter won't have to be there at a certain time of day. There are also automatic coop doors but they sometimes fail.

My chickens LOVE clover. Also dandelion leaves. I cut them grass clippings 2-3" long almost every day with the yard scissors and fill a small pail to give them. Long grasses can curl up in the crop and impact it.

(But if they "clip" the long grasses themselves they automatically choose small clippings.)

I like the Fort Knox idea also. When the chickens are free ranging I'm pretty much on guard along with Morgan my dog. But when they are put up I have that feeling of security and naturally let my guard down. You can't stay in tension all the time. When I let my guard down I know short of a bear or some animal with a chain saw can't bother my birds. Whenever they're in the run they're safe, I know it. For my peace of mind I like the Fort Knox run.
