How do I help my chickens lay more eggs?

I have three girls, and one of them isn't laying at the moment. I was wondering what causes this and how I can help them begin laying eggs again.

Hi Snowgirl1, if you give your chickens back on egg each time you take them that can work.

Hello and welcome to BYC. Shortening days and moulting both contribute to a slowing of egg production. Some people put lights in the coop to help with egg production. From what i recall, aiming for around 14 hours of total "daylight" per day.

As you can see, there are quite a few reasons why a hen will slow down on egg laying. Sometimes there are things you can do to encourage more egg production and sometimes it's just up to the bird...in other words, they'll lay when they're good and ready
