How do I know what breed is right for us?

Thanks Anne, I will see what I can find out. I know that dying could be a good learning experience. I just want to make sure I get them from some place that is reasonable and clean etc, I just don't want to wind up with chicks that are all sick and die in a few days. That would be way to traumatizing for them.

You can see how well I listen lol

He went to bed hours ago. He tells me the same thing too. And I listen just like you!

I'm heading to bed. I'll research more tomorrow & let you know if I find anything useful. Good luck on your end.

Thank you Celtic Druid. I will definitely keep everyone posted. For the most part, most people seem to be in agreement on the breeds. I am most likely going to go with a few different breeds. The only reservation I have is the roosters. I am just afraid they may be a little more on the semi aggressive side and I don't know how they would be with my kids. Any thoughts?

The nicest, calmest roosters I have had are my Jersey Giants and my Welsummer. I have had a couple of Orpintons that are not very nice to each other or the other roos in the yard. I just put down my Blue Ameraucana because he was a miserable little cuss to all the other chickens in the yard. I had a New Hampshire roo that was a snot last summer for a while, but this spring was pretty mellow, but he disappeared the other day when I went out to gather some up I was selling. I figure an eagle or fox got him

I would go to a breeder who is paying attention to breeding good temperament into their flock and avoid hatcheries if you are going to keep a roo.

Somehow, I am thinking this is what will wind up happening to us to. Breeding and showing is definitely not a concern to us now. I am going to try to stick to the list for the time being, but if it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out..lol

Thank you soooooo much! I should head to bed soon too. Especially before he wakes up and realizes I am in the exact same spot as when he fell asleep

That is the best way to go about it, I think.
How old are the kiddos? Mine is 6 and while she did get sad when her buddies didn't make it, we had some great funerals and ceremonies complete with effigies.

My 2 are identical twin girls. They are 7 1/2 (they will never let me forget to add the half...lol). They have dealt with the death of their buddies before, fortunately it was only a few fish, 3 hermit crabs and a butterfly. Nothing major yet though, thank goodness

They will have so much fun with the chickens! There is an egg hunt every day. Even though there is only one place to lay eggs...

Good luck to you and the kids. Let us know what you end up with.
It is waaaay past my bedtime.

I am totally looking forward to raising the chicks with my girls. I think it will be a great bonding experience for all of us.

I will definitely update you.

I know how late it is, it is soooooooo past my bedtime too! It is just this sight is very addictive.

Talk to you tomorrow

Sandra
