How Do I Know Whats In My Egg

my incubator is still not here yet!

Grrrrr!

Egg is amazingly, still okay though.... when candling the egg, I can see the baby inside, moving around...!

I've read that they get pretty lonely being an only chick. I'd really consider buying it a companion or two... good luck!!! I'm excited for you.

I'm pretty sure its all gone to hell....

The weather here has reached astronomically hot status, so I put the egg away from the heat source of the computer, but despite that, the egg actually has heated up to a point where its hot to touch.

Embryo is more than likely dead now.

im so sorry. i am in nearly the same boat but my egg is in a box with a heat lamp blah blah... it is really cold here so the first day i was trying to figure out how to control the temp and it went to the top of the therm. about 130f hope it didnt die

Don't give up yet.... if it hasn't been that hot for a long time it may still be ok. I hatched my first eggs ever under a heat lamp. I woke up in the night once and the temp said 105, when ideally it should not have been more than 100 degrees. So I opened the box lid and let the heat out, move the light off of them, waited awhile and put the lamp back, but a bit higher and I had several episodes like that where it just got too hot. I was sure I fried them, but 4 out of 5 hatched, and the last one was alive at hatch time, but apparently could not break out of the shell, so she did not "fry" either. So don't give up yet, try to adjust your temp if possible and just do your best. You may yet make it!!

Is it a heat lamp or desk lamp? I used a desk lamp and a low watt bulb. I adjusted the heat by raising or lowering the lamp. The lamp was usually a good 5 or 6 inches above the eggs, sometimes more. Hatching with a lamp can be stressful! Just remember to put your temp gauge right in the midst of the eggs so you have an idea of what the temp is there. Move it at times to the outer edge to see what the temp difference is. When you turn your eggs ( I did mine three times a day) move the outer eggs to the center and the center to the outer at least once each day. That way the heat will be warmer and cooler on no one egg, if that makes sense to you. If you have trouble with your humidity level, get some sponges and wet them, and keep them around the eggs, but not where they can leak water to them. I kept rolled towels under my sponges. I also used water containers in there too. I hope this helps you some! Editing to add that I also kept a record of what my temp was when I turned the eggs and when I turned them, and also what side I turned up. So it would say X up, then the next would say, O up. You don't get confused that way and having the record really helps. I did mine on a large calendar.

My incubator FINALLY arrived this morning...

I spent a few hours setting it up and working on keeping it at a stabilised temperature, which I managed to do okay.

Because I was hoping beyond hope that I didn't fry my egg the other day, I've been (once a day) candling it in the hopes of seeing if anything is going on inside, or if I killed the egg...

My findings?
On the day I thought I killed the egg, I had candled it that morning, and I could see the air sac, I could see the little dark lump that meant baby, I could see it moving all around...

1 day after I thought I fried my little eggy, I candled it, and the contents of the egg were still visible, I could still see the veins, the little dark blob that meant baby, but personally couldn't see much movement, but I was trying to be very careful with the egg after that first bout of overheating.

In recent days, the interior of the egg appears to have gotten denser and denser and darker and darker. When I candle it, I can see only the air sac inside, and thats about it. The inside of the egg is otherwise full of... maybe baby? The egg also feels heavier somehow... Like it weighs more than it did before....? Is that even possible???

Maybe I didn't fry it? Maybe baby is still alive?
I don't know for certain, but my incubator is sitting on the desk next to my computer, with a lone egg inside, waiting...
And I'm watching...
Hoping. Praying.

Fingers crossed for me please everyone!

Hey,

It sounds very promising like a viable chick, so I'm crossing my fingers for you! I wish you the best!

I just wish I knew the exact date it was supposed to hatch.... coz right now, I'm completely in the dark, not knowing whether I should be turning the egg still, or leaving it alone...
Or when it will hatch...

It's kind of frustrating.
At least next time I might be better prepared.

I've been incubating this egg for a week though... No idea exactly how old it was when I got my hands on it....
So.... I guess its just a waiting game now.

That is hard! But you just do your best and hopefully it will all turn out ok.

If the egg is all dark and the air sac bigger, you know you are in the last stages though. I wish you the best!! Keep us posted!
