How do I mix (DE) Diatomaceous Earth with grain ...

Quote:
DE has no effect on internal parasites. Its ONLY proven use is as an "insecticide" and it only works if it's DRY.

Depending on the type of worms you saw, you can either use Safeguard 10% liquid wormer, or Ivomec 1% injectable (both given ORALLY)

The Safeguard dosage is 1 ML per 5 lbs of body weight.

The Ivomec is 1/10 ( one TENTH) ML per 10 lbs body weight

DO NOT use Ivomec on any "Collie" breeds or mixes

Ivomec will NOT kill tapeworms, but WILL treat for heartworms and all others. Use the Safeguard for tapeworms

Now I'm conflicted - everything I've read about DE says it will kill internal worms and parasites, which is why we feed it to the chickens.

Is this just for dogs that you're referring to?

its good i read this i knew you could use it on the floor in a deep litter meathod but i did not know that they could eat it what i would like to know is if helps with worms and everything

There are NO scientific studies that I can find to show DE does anything other than kill insects when its DRY.

If youll go back to your sources and read carefully, most of them are places trying to SELL DE, and they are citing "clinical OBSERVATIONS" which basically means it's not a real "study" but just anectdotal "evidence"

Safeguard and Ivomec are PROVEN anthelmintics. I have too much invested in my animals to use something without it being SCIENTIFICALLY proven.

DE WILL kill mites and flies OUTSIDE your livestock, but since it works by cutting and dehydrating them, it can only work if kept dry.

And the ONLY reason it has a "food grade" rating at all is so it can be mixed with DRY grain in storage.

If anyone can show a REAL, SCIENTIFIC study to prove otheriwse, I'd be happy to see it, but I've been looking for a couple of years and haven't found any yet

I had a stool sample tested at the vet from 1 of my 5 chickens. My chickens are fenceless freerange and I live in the tropics.
The result was

1 mite
2 strongyles type eggs
a few small roundworm eggs
coccida type eggs
bacillus looking stuff
1 smaller capillaria

So I am now going to feed the chickens the DE in their grain for 1 month and then do another sample from the same chicken plus the others while I am at it, to see if there is any difference.
Upon the results I will make up my mind whether the DE is working.

I asked the Vet if it was Ok to eat the eggs with those results and he thought, yes, it was ok, I would like any ones opinion on that!

Also I was thinking I might like to by a microscope and do the feces tests myself.
I didn't take science at school and don't know to much about this but I am sure by asking the vet and reading up on the internet I could learn to identify the parasites.
Anyone with information to help me here would be apprieciated
