how do you all buy just a few chicks?

If you can hang in there till March or so, then you'll be able to find them locally at most feed stores. But if you're wanting them earlier, then as others have said, Meyer or MyPetChicken. Shipping is higher than a cat's butt, but custormer service is usually great and chicks are typically healthy.

I ordered 10 chicks from Meyer in the fall and they all have done great. I specifically ordered from them because their minimum order is 3. It is true that the shipping is outrageous, though.

All of the TSC's I've been to have a minimum chick purchase of 6. All that I've seen also rotate the breeds they have each week. You could wait, but the odds of them having each of those breeds at the same time so you can get your six seem pretty small.

On the other hand, you may have a local feed store that doesn't have minimum requirements in spring. Last year I knew exactly what I wanted, too. It involved 2 of several breeds with a grand of total of 10. LOL It was no problem with them and I didn't have to pay all that shipping.

I obtained my chicks from Meyer, which is in Ohio, and they were very healthy. That would be good since you would probably get your chicks quickly, say overnight. My minimum order was 4, and I didn't think shipping was all that bad. Their selection is very good, and I have heard that MyPetChicken gets some of their chicks from them. It is easier on the chicks if you order them in more moderate weather such as April, when they don't freeze or get too stressed.

Go local if you can. Ive had people just buy 2 chicks from me before. I dont think I could every buy just 2 of any birds

Your easiest way would be to go on Craig's List. That's what I did a few years ago when I just wanted three chicks. I happen to be a couple hundred miles from the big city where the chicks were located, but some friends who lived there were coming down, so they stopped by and got the three chicks and brought them to me.

I bet you could find chicks a lot closer to you than I found. Lots of folks get their orders from the hatchery and find out that the 25 minimum order is way too many and they need to thin the herd.

I got my four pullets from a local woman. Found her on Craig's list. By doing it that way, I also knew if one turned out to be a roo, she would have exchanged it for another pullet.

My minimum from Meyer is 8 because I'm in CA. I am going to wait until March when our local feed stores get their chicks in! That's where I got the 5 I have now.
