How do you deal with people who "expect" free eggs?

My vote is for this approach!

We have a couple in our neighborhood, real busy bodies. After I had my chickens for a few months and they were starting to lay, they found a convenient time to catch me and talk....about how much they just love eggs. and they also liked hearing my rooster crow, hinting that if I gave them some eggs they would not complain about my rooster crowing. Except I didn't have a rooster and told them so. Their jaws dropped, but they quickly composed themselves and I told them you don't need a rooster to get eggs. A half hour later I took them an 18 count carton and they humbly accepted it. LOL

Since their property doesn't adjoin mine I've been able to avoid them since then.

I'd just say "between what my family uses and what i sell i don't have any left over"

you have to see this woman for work on a regular basis, so you don't want to be rude. If she then offers to buy the eggs, then you can quote her a price $4 per dozen, but since we work together I'll sell them to you for $3 per dozen.

I have a similar situation with our neighbors. They can well afford the eggs so $ isn't a problem.

I did give them a dozen free, and casually mentioned that I have standing orders from people who buy my eggs, but that I'd give her more "if/when" I have extras. I told her, truthfully, that a few times I've sold completely out... leaving us with no eggs for ourselves.

Good luck... hope everything works out well for you!

Note to self... need more hens!

I have a nightmare of a lady for a mail person. That is putting it quite nicely. Everyday for almost 2 weeks she would actually come and knock on my door like she had a package for me. I would open the door and she would say, " Are my eggs ready yet?"

I don't even know this woman. I would just smile and say no eggs today. Finally my husband talked to her and told her that we don't sell eggs or give them away and he cited some weird made up city code as to why we can't share our eggs. She stopped. Thank the Lord.

I might give a quarter discount for the egg carton, not fifty cents - but they pay for the eggs from day one here, and I can't keep up with the demand. $3.00 a dozen. The only ones who get free eggs are my sister and mother. Even my SIL, who I offered to give to free, pays, she understands the hens' food costs money, so she doesn't mind paying.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions!

I'll definitely put them to use tomorrow when I see her.

Ask her for help drafting a will, and see if that's free.

When you get the $200 bill from her, send her a bill for $200 eggs. There are plenty of people here with $200 eggs to defend your pricing!

Seriously, I'd give her some eggs, you can always be in short supply do to their immense popularity later. You can probably spare a carton every few months.
