How do you deal with people who "expect" free eggs?

I think I would begin to talk about the cost of feed and how if you don't start to sell some soon you will be going in the hole. See if she has any suggestions on who might buy some to help you out LOL

Good thread!

I can be pretty selfish with my eggs. Feeding my family comes first, then any I may have left over I sell for $4 bucks a dozen. I bust my back taking care of my chicks and hens and people really don't get it.

I have used the "cost of feed and maintainence" line many times. Not too mention, its not the most pleasant job in the world cleaning out hen houses.

If your hinty friend wants a free dozen offer to have come clean out the hen house for you. She may change her tune pretty quickly.

My older hens are getting ready to molt which means no eggs till probably March, so I will be really greedy till my pullets start laying in Nov.

"Well, I normally get $... a dozen for my eggs. If you need some FREE eggs, I'll be glad to let you know if we have some eggs left over that we don't use ourselves or sell. And if you'd like to buy some, I'll give you a discount of ... for giving me your cartons! How does that sound? Shall I put you on my regular egg buyer list? You could probably expect a dozen every ..... days (weeks)(months)."

I need to save this so I can use it if the situation presents itself. I think it covers everything, friendly, generous and informative. It is a win win for everyone.

The OP could do what I did. I brought eggs to work and put them in the refrigerator. I then placed a coffee can on the fridge with a sign taped to it that says, "Egg Money/$2.00 per dozen." I didn't have to tell anybody anything. The egg money can said it all. When it comes time to buy feed, I just empty the coffee can. So far I have not been ripped off.

Definitely one of the best topics! Creative people & creative answers.

Hmmmm. . . now that I read over this, it sounds a little like a drug pusher giving first freebies to get people hooked.

LOL...welllll...we're kinda hooked on our chickens, too!

I can't even leave my lunch in the frig with taking a chance that it will get rippped off, If I put a cartoon of fresh eggs in there is would be gone before I closed the door!

I worked at a place like that....LOL

But I also know if I put an honor box cooler full of eggs in my neighborhood, I would most likely get paid more than I asked. I love my neighbors....mostly
