Lets just say my dog didn't just get sprayed he attacked and killed a skunk that was in our yard tonight. So he has a face full of spray and smells like you wouldn't believe. I have had dogs for 15 years and have never dealt with this.

Plug your nose? Sorry, I've never had to deal with it. I have heard tomato juice or you can buy some shampoo that removes skunk odor.

Same thing happened to my dog, right in the face. There are a lot of things to try but none of them worked for me. Especially since it was in the face, you have to be careful about not getting anything in their eyes. It took about 6 months before he did not smell anymore. So Sorry!

We use a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dish washing liquid that we found through a google search. I don't recall the mix ratios, but it did work. Good luck...Okay...I did a quick search and found it...

"An easy to remember recipe of one pint of hydrogen peroxide, one small box of baking soda, and a couple of squirts of any dish washing liquid mixed in a gallon of water makes an effective, scientifically based antidote. Those ingredients, in their separate packages, are easy to store in a plastic bucket with camping equipment or on the back porch to be handy when they're needed. The recipe must be mixed up and used quickly; it loses its effectiveness within about an hour, and it will explode if it's kept in a covered container. CAUTION: hydrogen peroxide can blind your pet if it gets into their eyes. "

I dealt with this problem ALL last summer this is the only thing that really worked. Do not waste your money on that shampoo they sell in pet stores for skunk smell it does not work.

Mix hydrogen peroxide with baking soda and Dawn dishwashing liquid until you have a kinda paste. then soak th edog down with it let it sit for a little while then hose off. It really WORKS.

I second this. I worked at a humane society for a while and this was the only thing that would work to get the smell out. I did notice that if the smell was more in there body fur, like they rolled around in it, it was easier to get off. But if they had it on their face, it took a little more time to get it out. Because you have to be VERY CAREFUL when using this around the dogs face. So just take you time when cleaning him and do it a couple of times and the smell should go away. Best of luck to you!

Before you use or even after if you can't get the smell out, the Hydrogen Peroxide mixture, try using either a laundry stain remover or a carpet stain remover that has pet stain remover or enzyme in it. Leave it on the dog for about 5 minutes and then rinse off. It will cut that body fluid that smells on the dog before you even have to remove it. My dog actually killed a skunk this year in one of our sheds. She was in close quarters when she got sprayed so you can imagine it was horrific. After her bath that night she has been allowed into the house as usual because you cannot smell it one bit. Even my husband who is very picky about smells doesn't smell it.

I will second the DAWN dish detergent, For the mixture.
The spray from the skunk is an oil. and the best detergent to remove oil and grease is DAWN!

Thank you everyone. AC came out last night and he said the same thing about the Dawn but I couldn't remember the mixture he said. Thanks for the heads up on the peroxide as this is pretty much on his face. I spent the morning bleaching my porch as it had blood and froth all over it. The blood being from the skunk and the froth from my dog. AC took the skunk and Ricky is in quarantine at home until they can test the skunk and get the results back. He's up to date on his shots but his rabies does expire this December so that makes me a little nervous. I have never seen him like that. He is so happy go lucky and loves everything or so I thought. lol When he went after that skunk he didn't go after it to play with it. My kids and my nieces witnessed the whole thing and it was pretty traumatizing to them. I hosed him down last night and used some skunk stuff on him that a friend brought over and as everyone said does not work. I'll give him another bath today. I think I might try to shave him down also as he has really long thick fur. Thanks again!
