HOW do you get the vaseline on their combs?

I tried it again tonight - I was worried about the leghorns combs. I need 4 hands to do this!

Get em off the roost and do it in the dark as much as possible so that they don't wake up.


Roosters are harder though, they stay more alert at night and might peck you if you grab them. It might be easier if you could get someone else to hold them "football style" while you worked on their head. Any chance of a helper???

Sneak up on roo, toss a small blanket over him and wrap him up like a burrito with his head sticking out. Tuck roo under arm, scoop vaseline into other hand, rub all over roo trying to get some on comb too. Throw roo and blanket into the air run like crazy. Go back for blanket after roo flogs it and then forgets what it was used for.

I've been trying to get them on the roost (outside light on only), but not much luck
Will try to get my husband to help tomorrow night.

Warm the vaseline under your arm for 10 minutes so it's soft.

Do WriterOfWords' blanket trick.

Turn vaseline upside down and just plop down on comb. You don't want it too runny, but not too hard either. Also make sure not to smash it down onto their eyes and get them all upset. Just dunk their combs....like Dunkarooos kids used to eat

at roosting time, i catch em as they come up the door, and have vaseline warm from your hands, once they get used to the massage they relax, hold them under your arm, so they really can't do much but accept it...

In what kind of weather conditions are you supposed to put vaseline on them? Do you only put it on their combs? This is new to me- we seldom have much winter weather but we are expecting snow tomorrow and I didn't know they could get chapped skin.
