How do you handle unwanted evangelists who knock at your door?

I think the uber short bike ride is part of why we're so "popular"

Plus the other houses are 2 story townhouses (stairs to reach 2/3rd of them) so our 4 cul-de-sacs of duplexes is the easiest place to go. I think they've decided to give me extra intrest because of the wheelchair.

I'd like to disagree that people who refuse to listen, don't know what we're saying no to, I'm perfectly aware of what's in the bible, and the many variations of the chrstian sects, and frankly, not interested. Or to rip off obi-wan, "these are not the heathens you're looking for, move along."

I agree with you. Refusal of Christianity is not usually form a lack of understanding of the faith. To many, proselytizing and trying to convert people is considered to be the height of arrogance. Not to mention down right rude. Religion is personal and people will come to it on their own. how would these people feel if pagans began to show up on their door on a regular bases to convert them? or satanists? then claim the Christians reject their religion because of ignorance?

We are not rude by any means. At our last house in the city, I befriended a lady. She was really nice. It was fine until she brought others into the house and wanted me to read the material. Luckily, I moved. She bought me a nice moving away plant. Here at this house, my husband last year didn't know what to do when he answered the door and talked to them a long time. They kept coming back and my dh would hide. I'd open up the door and tell them dh wasn't available. After a few times of coming over, I had to ask them to stop. I'd always be in my PJ's and busy with the chickens. They now finally stopped coming. Dh should of taken care of what he started instead of putting it on me.

I don't understand the big deal everyone is making about any group talking about there beliefs. I am a christian and I feel there is no more important topic to talk about than where I am going to spend enternity. Are they rude or mean to you when they stop by? It's good to see people stand for somthing that they believe in. Is your time so valuable that you can't visit for 5 min.? If you are uncomfortable talking about it then they are probably at the right door!! No I am not a JW!

Laura I have a very similar group here. I even hung a sign that said "no solicitors holy or otherwise" if it was someone's kid that would be one thing but it's always grown adults, often a granny or three, well you should've read the sign, i didn't hang it for decor.

Yeah, I'm fully expecting they will ignore my sign and knock anyway. And I mean it too, I'm kind of a hippie, I really don't want them wasting all that paper!!

i'm sorry you have to deal with it. These people seem to think because they believe it, then it must be right. It can be difficult to deal with. they wish to remain ignorant of other beliefs while trying to make sure no one is ignorant of theirs. Then they can't understand why people react so angerly to them. I will be polite the first time, and if I like their approach I will discuss it with them offer them food and drink, but I will NOT tolerate pushiness, rudeness, or arrogance on their part.

I do! I use it as kindling paper in my wood stove.

But think of all the people that don't use it in some way, it just gets tossed. It would be nice if they weren't leaving it after I ask them not to, don't ya think?

True....don't know why they still are...but maybe you could read it first!

before you burn it...

you could also read literature on witchcraft. how about i go to your house and try to convert you to wicca, or better yet i'll just e mail literature on wicca or maybe satanism too remember to read it before you delete it!
the only reason you don't want to hear it is because you don't know about it. but you need to know teh truth! Witchcraft is the truth! No? Don't want to hear about that how about Buddhism? Or Hindu. Maybe Islam? they are the fastest growing religion in the world for a reason. How about the rational and reasonable system of agnosticism... or atheism?

Alas, that's the sticking point isn't it? You call it "help" we view it as "harassment". The way I and many others see it, faith is a private thing between you and whatever god/gods you do/don't believe in. I'd be equally offended if you walked up and asked me about my underpinnings. Why? because those things are private, and i don't discuss private things with random strangers who show up to pester me bi-weekly.

Lol....nope....don't wanna know anyone's underpinnings! Yes, it is help...and it's an education for people...take it or leave it...but not before you have enough knowledge of it to make a decision should you disregard it

then how about you learn about other religions and read their literature and listen to them. How can you reject wicca without sufficient knowledge? and what your church preaches about it doesn't count. you have to actually listen to a witch. same goes for Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, Judiesm, toaism, and the thousands of native american religions. and the thousands of other religions many that are much older than your religion.

I don't think it's a matter of being uncomfortable. It's a matter of having something you don't want to talk about forced at you.To me it's no different than someone coming to the door and wanting to discuss aliens invading the planet next week. Or someone trying to sell me a Kirby vacuum. Sorry just not interested and I don't owe anyone 5 minutes of my time to try to get themselves more heaven points. They should get their heaven points working in a soup kitchen. At least that is something that is helpful to people in need. I think proselytizing is mostly done for the one doing the deed. Kind of like trying to get people to sign on to a pyramid scheme.

That's her whole bloody point, she';s not interested in reading it at all.

Alas, I can't stop trying...
