How do you humanely put down your pet rooster?

Sorry everyone! We sometimes go long periods without internet access. We moved back to our farm 4 days after my last post and gave Motorcycle his own "get better" enclosure. He did not improve, but seemed Ok with getting himself around differently. He even tried calling some of the girls into his pen to share his food.

Then this morning Iwent to give him his food and he hadn't moved from his evening spot (this was unusual)! He was still alive but did not look good. He had pooped all over his legs and there were maggots already in the poop. I cleaned him up and am waiting for my husband to come home so we can take him in and let him not suffer anymore! Thank you everyone for caring about our good friend Motorcycle!

I'm sorry this did not have a good outcome. Sorry about Motorcycle. I saw your other post about your new little bantam roo. Is that working out well?

Amy, I'm so sorry. This is never easy, but you know you did everything you could for him. And you are giving him one more beautiful gift in a humane death. Bless you.

I hope he is, too. It's amazing what chickens can do. I'm the same way...I know chopping off their head or wringing their neck is supposed to be the simplest and most pain free for them, but for us???? But...we were able to get the State Agriculture department to euthanize one of our birds for us...they said they were going to use her for class lectures at OSU, and I couldn't think of a better way for her to go! It was a lot cheaper than having a vet do it...they just charged us $12.00 for the euthanasia, though they did a necropsy too that we paid more for. Just a thought...I don't know if other State ag departments will do the same, but it's worth looking into, maybe, for those of us who can't stand the alternative. Everyone will face this, who has chickens, sooner or later.

Do Vets use the same drug to put down animals that they use to execute prisoners? If so I do not see how it is humane let alone pain free. A morphine overdose would be a pleasant way to go. I never understood why they don't use an opiate overdose to put down animals and people with....

I Hope your bird goes naturally and peacefully...

If you do live out in the country, nothing beats a 22 to the back of the head. It's over in a flash, matters if you can stomach it thou.

No, I think on prisoners they give them potassium to stop their heart, or some cocktail like that.
I had to put my 37 year old horse down a few years ago. The hardest thing was to stop being in denial. The decision and the act were more of a relief because I knew he was suffering, in pain, not eating. I'm glad I was there for him.

Motorcycle died before my husband got home and it was peaceful. I'm kind of glad we didn't have to take him in the car to a place he didn't know! I will be looking for Silkie eggs to hatch in Dec. or Jan. (so any out there, remember me!). Thanks again everyone!
Adopted Bantum Roo UPDATE: He's great and he's the tinyest roo I've ever had! He loves all of the other chickens too!! He is an Old English Game Bantum, his color is still debateable!
