How do you keep a roo quiet?

I leave both of ours locked up in their respective coops until after 10am. Works great and keeps the neighbors happy with us. I also make a HUGE deal out of inviting their kids over to see the brand new chicks when they hatch, a sort of chick birthday party. That way, the parents are invested in keeping their kiddos happy with our proud daddy roosters!

As others have said it's pretty much impossible during the day. I have close neighbors so my roo gets put in my old brooder in our insulated shed at night, then I let him out just before I go to work or around 10AM on weekends. I will say that the shed he is in at night is pitch black even when it's totally light outside and even that doesn't stop him from crowing starting at about 7 or 8 am. Since it's insulated it's muffled enough that you can't really hear it when you're in the house but it definitely hasn't stopped him from crowing. If you really think it's going to be an issue I just wouldn't keep a roo. Personally I wouldn't have kept this one if we weren't moving out to take over my family's farm in a few months. It's a hassle I wouldn't want to deal with long term.

Well one thing to keep in mind that yapping dogs are actually a LOT noisier than a rooster is. Unfortunately, there are some folks in neighborhoods who will complain more about an occasional rooster crow . . . simply because they can. We have a guy down the street who has a little terrier that is in the back yard, all night, every night, yapping away. Folks complain, but animal control won't do much. Unfortunately, for some reason roosters seem to be fair game for many municipalities.

If we ever have to cross that bridge, I plan on making it a court matter, as noise/nuisance ordinances generally have to be prosecuted/enforced fairly, and it wouldn't be that difficult to demonstrate a discriminatory and uneven enforcement. Can't go after roosters and grant immunity to the much more annoying yappy dogs.
