How do you live with yourself eating the birds you raised?

I sum it up as to where you choose to draw the line... If you are wearing leather shoes then some sensitive cow died to provide the leather. If your shoes are made of rubber then some poor, defenseless tree had holes drilled in it's body and the very life blood of it was drawn out just for that purpose. So... everything on this planet has it's time and purpose! After the great flood God instructed Noah that all these animals were for meat( the clean one's) If it is one's choice to not eat their chickens( or any other livestock) then that's cool with me. Only question I have for those people is if you hatch as many eggs as some of us do, then what is your plan for all the inevitable roosters you will have? Won't take long to be over-run with them not to mention the enormous feed bill.! I thank my God that He has made it possible for me to have a source of chicken, lamb and other meat that was not mass produced and full of chemicals that I can't even pronounce!

Even if you don't believe in God, you've still got the whole "survival of the fittest" and eat or be eaten thing to deal with. If you want to look at man as being purely naturalistic, we are omnivores either way. Can you be so "enlightened" that you can just choose to entirely bow out of the whole circle of life, while the rest of the living organisms on this earth go on about their business, eating, growing, reproducing, dying?

A chicken can potentially live what, 15 years? All those cute, fuzzy chickens are going to add up pretty quickly if they are not harvested. If you don't eat them, something else will, and I guarantee a dog, opossum, or coyote isn't going to kill them more carefully and humanely than I do. Matter of fact, the last few chickens I've pried out of my neighbor's dog's mouth got the tar shaken out of them, skin ripped up, internal injuries--and the dog wasn't done with it yet. No, they just leave them lay in the yard when they're done and maybe they'll come back and roll in it later.

I myself do believe in God, but you are right, that is mostly beside the point in this conversation. Nature is still "red in tooth and claw". Chickens are prey.

Really I don't know why I got into this thread in the first place. The title is clearly a loaded question. But you asked--so those of us who enjoy healthy, tasty chicken meat answered. If you don't like the answer, that's fine, but don't go insulting people about how unmoral and unenlightened you think meat-eaters are. It's not like anybody's gonna put down that drumstick because a couple vegetarians/vegans are insulted or creeped out by people eating their "pets". You gonna tell a lion he is wrong to eat an antelope? You think the worms are gonna think twice before they eat you someday?

(ETA: In defense of the original poster, I did go back and re-read your posts and I think this was an honest question to begin with.)

I have a listing for nice pure bred cockerels, Ameraucanas and Marans, they are all sweet and hang out in the yard with my family. if they dont sell when then I will process them as I just dont have the need for that many. I will be upset about it no doubt about it and will probably have my friend do the killing part while I clean them. Still, at least this way if I cant find them homes I provide food for my family and believe me we use just about every part of them here

I remember an issue of Cracked magazine from the '70s where they spoofed an interview with Kung Fu/David Karadine (sp) character. He's talking about the harmony of nature and then in a series of panels, he's squashing various bugs who are harming "lesser" bugs. [think "the old lady who swallowed a fly" type progression). I don't know why I thought of it.

Journey11, I agree. Part of this discussion sounds like the "we must go green NOW" argument from some at work, regardless of the cost or impact....

How do you live with yourself eating the birds you raised? By knowing I have given them a good life, showed mercy and respect for their sacrifice, and my family is fed to live another day.

How do I live with myself? It IS hard to take the live of a living, breathing animal. But my body was created to eat MEAT as well as vegetables and grains. I am totally unsatisfied on a meat free diet, although I have cut down on the quantities. But that's everything, lately. Cut down on consuming foods, as well as goods and services. And I think it is hypocritical to eat meat, but not be able to face the cold hard fact that a living creature gave it's life for me to live. But rest assured, I know where I am on the food chain....

Gee , I wish I could be a moralist feeling free to find fault with anything/everything a caveman would do to survive by eating whatever was available. If the cavemen were as squeamish as some of us we wouldn't be here anymore than the chickens, cattle, pigs, etc., that we raise to eat, no matter who kills them.
