How do you pack a Chicken?

OMG could you imagine trying to drive with chickens loose in the back of your car? Sorry OP that thought made me think of my mother trying to bring a couple kittens that someone dumped by the side of the road to the shelter. She wound up covered in scratches. I used a dog crate to pick up five of my chickens. It was about an hours drive and they rode in the back of my pickup truck with no problems. I just tied the crate down right behind the cab so they would be protected from the wind and the cage wouldn't slide around.

This is key to transporting birds. They need to be packed pretty snugly in their carriers/boxes. I don't transport birds often, but one of the few times I did I gave them too much room to move around and the birds got hurt on the sorry excuse for roads I have in my area. After that I opted to wedge them into a much smaller carrier. They didn't get hurt that way.

Good luck.

When I got new hens from the hatchery they just dropped them in a cardboard box that had been divided in half. They made the drive home (1 1/2 hrs) just fine, we actually had to stop for food, so they were technically in the boxes for about 2-2 1/2 hrs. I didn't much care about the fact that they dropped 4 birds per box (the boxes were maybe 1 ft square), but since I hadn't brought anything sturdy enough (I was just planning on getting chicks, but the hubby saw some hens he "had to have!") I think that when & if I ever have to move my girls they'll be in the dog's kennel, while the dog rides in the front with me - he's a bit more controllable than four crazy birds. They should be fine for such a short drive so long as you can keep them calm. Good luck

I transport chickens hundreds of miles way too often

The cat/dog carriers work great with shavings in the bottom...they like to fit snugly in them. What looks crowded to you will be just fine for them-they ride much better that way. If this weather doesn't break soon I will be driving 450 miles one way for some that can't be shipped now because of cold weather

when i got my 4week old birds, i put them in a rabbit cage with some pine shavings and they rode home in the trunk of my friend's S2000... when we would take a sharp turn we could hear them, but that was only like twice... they made it home sleeping and perfectly fine... it was an hour and a half drive too...

good luck, they'll be fine, just don't put food or water for them... it will just make a mess... pine shavings are a good thing if they don't get all over the place...

My roo likes to sit on my lap or on the console of the front seat of my truck for little rides into town. He likes to look out the window and he only crows if I stop to talk to somebody. He's a good boy. My normally mellow duck didn't care for the ride and he got carsick.

Your chickens will be fine in any of the various containers suggested, except maybe the cooler

When I take my parrots on longer journeys, I give them grapes so they have a little sustenance/hydration that's less likely to make them sick. My vet tech, who had tons of experience with birds. suggested this.

Good luck with you move; I know it's a pain no matter how much you try to organize. But make sure your chickens are ready to be put into their new home the second you arrive so they don't have to endure further stress of waiting around and wondering and sensing your discombobulation/excitement, etc.
