Well, I received my 25 chicks I ordered from Meyer on the 17th, plus two extras. All in good shape, and put them on my shredded newspaper, it is very good for litter, does not mat, absorbs waste, does not dye the chicks black, it is in every respect a perfect litter, so if anyone wants to use a good inexpensive litter, use the waste from your paper shredder, as it is perfect. they are going on two weeks old, and doing great, I still have all 27 in terrific shape, with no sickish ones, and no loses.

I've used shredded newspaper for years, not just in the brooder, but in the coop as well. Spotlessly dry, odor free, and easy to clean. Never had any problem with the ink coming off. And the ink here is soy based.

Imp-The hens get upset if I rip up the crossword though. They like to finish in pen.

I don't use shredded newspaper, but my chicks love snuggling in shredded printer paper. There is no inky mess and they seem to like it better than pine chips.

We use a thing called "Grip rite".Its rubber so you can reuse it,its washable and you can sterileize it.And it only costs 1.00 at the Family Dollar. We are pretty active with our brooder box so we change it twice a day.
