How does this stuff happen ???? UPDATE Mystery solved page 3 6/22/09

Someone has had their way with you. You must be a good chicken daddy, and they snuck her in on you.

**Feel the love**

...and post an ad? I suspect this had to have had human intervention, and you likely won't find the culprit. Those aren't her eggs, either, and you'll want to candle to see if they are viable. They could be any type of egg, as there are dozens of chickens that could have lay brown large eggs...there's info in the incubating and hatching section to learn how to candle.

Enjoy her!

Perhaps she walked in behind you, when you didn't notice and went over and sat on the first eggs she saw. That would be just like a Silkie- they are sneaky when the want to be, LOL I think they can smell eggs that need to be sat from miles away- hehe

I have solved the mystery !!! Well as it turns out the neighbor had a silkie that had gone broody and she decided to let her hatch out 2 eggs. Well when she discovered that somebody had been laying in the silkies nest and she now had 8 eggs she was going to build a pen around her to keep others out. Then the great idea came to her. She knew that I have my 3 young banties in a secure area and that the banties wouldn't bother the silkie. So she gets the bright idea that she will put her silkie in with my banties, much easier than building an enclosure I guess. So now DW is all eggscited about hatchin some little ones, problem is that 2 of the eggs had been under the silkie for about 2 weeks and aparrently the other 6 came in the last few days so now what will happen ? Will the hen leave the other eggs when the 2 hatch or will she set till they hatch?? I should have known. This is the same neighbor who snuck 6 white chicks in with my colored ones.
I have such an evil neighbor but it is all in fun.

That is hilarious. What a great neighbor.

If the 2 week eggs hatch, you will indeed have a problem. Mama isn't going to raise the chicks and set the rest of the eggs at the same time, for sure. I would expect her to raise the chicks and abandon the eggs, but they are chickens, so who knows....

Got a bator? If not, guess you could try some sort of moisture source and a heating pad.... have you read the thread about the woman who incubated in her bra? (If not, yes I'm serious, and yes it worked.)

Well, I am elated to hear that you solved your mystery! I am also glad to hear that your wife is excited about the possibility of little ones running around in the yard. It'll be great therapy for her.

As long as the space ship does not land in your pasture one night and the next morning you have 10 sillkie hens in your barn you are doing good.

Yup, that is how they are multiplying. The evil ones are being let loose on unsuspecting "neighbors" and they in turn are dispersing them without even knowing how they got there in the first place.

Really, start counting them, you will be surprised !!

Ok, so how do I signal the alien ship that I would be willing to allow them to land in my yard and drop off a few ET Silkies? I would take the best care of them that I could, unless I had to feed them something strange, like plutonium. What do alien Silkies eat?

Well since I don't have a bator I guess the neighbor who the eggs belong to will have to carry them till they hatch or bad things happen ( I have read of them exploding {that would kinda serve her right} ).

Oh boy, I must say that I wish I had a neighbor like yours!!Once the eggs hatch, I think you should act like you bought the silkie and put her in there on those eggs... Like you never talked to your neighbor and figured this out. Just play real dumb, and once she's down a silkie plus a few eggs, next time *MAYBE* she'll think twice about putting strange birds in your coop, especially without asking! Then of course you'll have a silkie and some chicks... But oh well, the silkie doesn't take up that much room!!
