depends on the breed and the individual chicken and how bad they want to be on the other side. mine won't go over a 2 ft fence into the garden. nor the 6 ft privacy fence. but they do fly up on top of the coop that is about 3.5 ft tall. you could always trim a wing to keep them from flying over.
