How Is Cackle Hatchery

I just ordered from them for the first time and my chicks took a day longer than expected to get here. Approximately half of them died.

I ordered 25 and they threw in a few extras. I never could get a clear count because they were constantly moving and there were so many of them at first.

They arrived with 5 dead and several more in very bad condition. Several more died within the next 24 hours. I called and they told me to call back in 48 hours with a total count and they would give me a refund on those or replace them. Of course, I get none of the shipping cost back.

They advised me to go buy some antibiotics to put in their water. I immediately tracked some down and drove to another town to buy some. They also advised me to give them some boiled egg yolk, which I did.

The ones that are left are beautiful chicks, in my opinion, and seem to be doing well. I really think it's the post office's fault that they took an extra day getting here. Cackle Hatchery was very nice on the phone when I finally got through to them and I hope to get a refund when I call them tomorrow with my total number of chicks that are still living.

I got my original batch of Silkies from them two years ago. All arrived healthy and happy, although one was small and didn't make it past day three. I still have some 2 1/2 years later. The only problem was a lot of them had feet problems. Over half had the wrong number of toes or they had curled feet. That really limited my 4H show choices. They also are definitly NOT show quality. If you are just looking for pets then I would recommend them though.

I didn't think of this until after I posted before. Here are pictures of my survivors from Cackle Hatchery in case you are interested. I was very happy with the variety that they sent, but unhappy that my chicks arrived a little too late. I ordered a purebred bantam asortment and a crested assortment. There were even more different kinds until I lost some of them. All I have left are the ones in these photos plus 4 more that were identical to some of these.

The extras that they put in my box were also the same types that I ordered. I was very happy about that.

I also agree with calling in the morning. Just keep hitting redial and it shouldn't take too long to get through to them. They were very nice on the phone when I called to tell them what happened with the shipping.

My surviving chicks are doing great now. It took a lot of TLC and cleaning off a lot of pasty butts, but they are finally doing well. The crested chicks seemed to do much better than the bantams, probably because they are a bit larger. I think the post office just kept them a day too long and the batams got too cold. The crested chicks also had no problems with pasty butt--only the bantams.

I called Cackle Hatchery today and they were kind about refunding money for all of the ones who died. They just asked how many of each type I had still living and will refund the rest back to my bank card. Of course, I get no shipping back.

I love my chicks!!

I have a shipment of silkies and frizzle cochin bantams coming this week from Ideal. I can't wait to get them!!

I ordered 15 from them for the first time on 4/18 and still haven't got a conformation or a ship date. Should I be worried? I understand that they are busy, but I would think they would have let me know something by now. Should I call? I am glad that you all recommend them because I didn't know anything about them when I ordered. I cant wait to get them.
