How is your flock today?

@Sally PB Thank you. :) We currently live in an area where they are pretty good about fixing outages within a few hours.

The Ice Storms are nothing like the Hurricane Season that will leave people with out power for weeks. Lucky I have not had the pleasure of experiencing any of that horrific weather yet. Portable generators are a must in this part of the country, helps to keep the ice cream in the freezer frozen until the power comes back on ! :gig

@416bigbore, yeah, I really feel for the people without power! We've had multi-day outages here, and it is a royal pain. No electricity = no water for us.

Sending positive waves that your power stays on! :fl:fl Stay safe.
we aren't part of this storm but we are on well water too. we just keep gallons of water in the basement - refilling any good jug we come across, two liters, juice bottles etc - for flushing the toilet in these situations.

Yeah, us too. I have some gallon milk jugs that are labeled "toilet water" for just that purpose. :gig

We do have a generator, and it has come to the rescue several times. When the power goes out out here, we are waaaaay down the list for priority. Five houses, way out in the boonies. The longest stretch was 4 days, and it was a freak straight line wind storm in May. At least it was warm!

luckily our chest freezer has so much meat in it that its basically full of solid ice packs.

generator for the house fridge if it goes long enough. but I've never gone 4 days.

There is something to be said for having grown up in the Midwest in a rural farming area that was subject to weather related power outages from time to time.

A wood/coal burning stove was a must in the house along with a few other portable items to make the experience more cozy until power was restored and the roads were opened up.

A person always had enough home canned food on hand with a deep freezer full of meat and other items to last 2-3 weeks without having to worry about a trip to town. The good old days! :)

@jwehl It's nice to be self-sufficient and have enough on hand for a week or two without having to worry and hoard away food like some of these extreme dooms day preppers.

Some of the newer MRE meals are ok to have on hand, but I would not want to make a steady diet of them. :)

I mean worst worst worst case scenario....horses make for a LOT of meat

@jwehl I agree 100%, but look at the up side of it. At least you know how they have been cared for and what good feed you have been giving them over the years. Lets just hope times never get that bad so we have to start eating our pets.

yeah it would take a lotttt to get there. plus they're probably better as transport once gas is unavailable
