How is your flock today?

Pics
Hi folks, hopping in after a small lurk.

My flock is great... 🌴 we are getting warmer up to 83 today? I have already noticed some of the hens starting to slow laying with the heat.
I have a broody due in a week or so- really wish I had marked my calendar!!! -nothing serious but always hoping for a few beautiful Light Brahma gals as I lost 2 this year. I will sell off what I don't need <- catch that....? NEED?!! :gig Also hoping a Dark Brahma caught but when I candled a few I saw 1 unfertilized DB egg. I'm not sure if the boy is able to stay on, lots of fluff.

I have the rainbow of Brahma's and hope to become specific with my breeding soon. Still juggling as I have a smallish, limited space to do my chicken thing. The Dark and Buff's are coming up on 8 months. I have been testing 3 cockerels out to see if I can find my main guy, Spider, a wingman. During the day is great but the mornings and eves... :barniethe feathers fly. Lucky me my small space has a series of fences and gates that have really worked for my chicken keeping- much like horses I tell ya.

Ya know, (unsolicited advice) when my boys are testing the waters, I pick them up and go for walks and change the scenery. It has worked and is working every time- and I have raised and rehomed A LOT of super friendly boys. No anger, just pick up when you have the opportunity (like when they are mating or roosting) and take a kind walk, look for bugs, talk to, give a treat, then set down or back with kindness.

I just rescued Ivan (the terrible) this morning because he hopped the fence chasing after feral hens. He let me pick him right up and he was the worst boy to date. I don't make him fight for his life, or dominate in a cruel way. He does not have the voice to tell me he is scared or pent up horney or protecting his flock. Just my opinion but I find it is the same dance with my horses. I put my foot one way and get a reaction, I step another and get a different reaction, it's a dance. I don't want to make an enemy out of either, just gently and respectfully be the boss.
Ivan is having his first date with the girls in the garden. So far... awesome. The dork is not blowing it... yet.

What did you get? 😍

I already had a test batch going on my Naked Neck Aloha egg's from my flock. The 41 hatching egg's that I got from another lady this morning are the regular Aloha's, and some of the Aloha/Lakeshore Egger's mix. The Blue-greenish egg's are from out of the Lakeshore Egger hen's.

Now my incubator is full, and I'll be having a split hatch with 5 due on May 10th, and the rest of them due on May 21st.
:ya Most exciting!!!
I can not even imagine what you get to do, the space and housing, the head work and excitement etc, etc. Sounds pretty awesome.

Well, you reminded me to check on my broody and her progress. I have only candled a few eggs once but I am sure she has it handled, though not as good as my sweet Jazzie- Dusty is her daughter and she is pretty good as a broody too. So, I think today is day 17 or 18. I changed her bedding about a week ago because she had pooped in it and on her eggs. I don't see her out very much but I do see the evidence of her eating and drinking, being I have her locked in a broody pen and only open the doors for her to go out and scream and bathe after 12-3 no big thing but I don't see her poop like I would like (wow, did I just say that I like to see broody poop out loud??!! 😬). Being I did not mark my calendar I am absolutely second guessing myself and have been listening for chirping lol. My brooder is set up and waiting. I am ready to meet the new kids.

I also have a major surplus of eggs... I have been very generous with my neighbors, made a few quiches but find myself thinking I may go for a combat hatch. I always feel this way when I rehome my cockerels. Such a glutton for punishment... :thWell, I have had a lot of inquiries and feed stores have been leery due to their losses and the condition of chicks. Plus we are in-between seasons... hoping my insanity passes...

Well, if you get too many cockerel's, you can have some sort of Hawaiian cook out with them as the guest of honor.
