Hi folks, hopping in after a small lurk.
My flock is great...
we are getting warmer up to 83 today? I have already noticed some of the hens starting to slow laying with the heat.
I have a broody due in a week or so- really wish I had marked my calendar!!! -nothing serious but always hoping for a few beautiful Light Brahma gals as I lost 2 this year. I will sell off what I don't need <- catch that....? NEED?!!
Also hoping a Dark Brahma caught but when I candled a few I saw 1 unfertilized DB egg. I'm not sure if the boy is able to stay on, lots of fluff.
I have the rainbow of Brahma's and hope to become specific with my breeding soon. Still juggling as I have a smallish, limited space to do my chicken thing. The Dark and Buff's are coming up on 8 months. I have been testing 3 cockerels out to see if I can find my main guy, Spider, a wingman. During the day is great but the mornings and eves...
the feathers fly. Lucky me my small space has a series of fences and gates that have really worked for my chicken keeping- much like horses I tell ya.
Ya know, (unsolicited advice) when my boys are testing the waters, I pick them up and go for walks and change the scenery. It has worked and is working every time- and I have raised and rehomed A LOT of super friendly boys. No anger, just pick up when you have the opportunity (like when they are mating or roosting) and take a kind walk, look for bugs, talk to, give a treat, then set down or back with kindness.
I just rescued Ivan (the terrible) this morning because he hopped the fence chasing after feral hens. He let me pick him right up and he was the worst boy to date. I don't make him fight for his life, or dominate in a cruel way. He does not have the voice to tell me he is scared or pent up horney or protecting his flock. Just my opinion but I find it is the same dance with my horses. I put my foot one way and get a reaction, I step another and get a different reaction, it's a dance. I don't want to make an enemy out of either, just gently and respectfully be the boss.
Ivan is having his first date with the girls in the garden. So far... awesome. The dork is not blowing it... yet.
