How is your flock today?

New chicks on Saturday!
:wee :celebrate :clap

I'm getting 5 Blue Australorp pullets from The Chick Depot in Gladwin, MI. I am sooo excited! Seems like everyone else is getting/hatching, or has already gotten/hatched.

Here's to healthy chicks!

So, you're finally getting those Blue Australorp's that you've been wanting! :thumbsup

@docteurshepherd what did you find in her crop. Bravo for having the courage- especially since you are so attached- I say that because the emotional connection seems like it could make things harder- heart and head. I am just curious because i have thought about doing one in the past but the need resolved itself. I would hope that I had the courage if needed.

Take heart on your hens eye. I have seen the blood eye b4 and I have seen it heal itself to the extent of better looking but altered vision. Chickens are amazing.

I'm with you folks on the vet. Hard to spend a couple hundred on a $5 chicken with a fragile existence. Like throwing money away and we all know how some vets are...

MOST exciting @BlueBaby!!!! Looking forward to photos when you can!!
Yes, my hatch was pretty decent but like I mentioned in past text, I think the knocking around effects my hatches. I always have 1 or 2 that are close but just don't seem to be able to finish the deed. I end up in limbo on weather to help or not. Seems a no win either way, so, I am waiting on the last 2 now having taken the rest out. I have low expectations for their outcome. That makes my hatch 13 with 2 late quitters= 15 viable eggs on the 10th day. I do have to say I am def patting myself on the back for being able to save the one chick as the chick is getting darn close to perfectly normal. I had to soak it in warm water and use tweezers every so slowly. That shell was cemented on. It took about an hour and i'll get a photo of the critter later. Was def worth it and I REALLY hope it is not a boy 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Everything has been going so smoothly that I'm feeling like doing a back to back hatch... :hmm:jumpy:jumpy:jumpy:th

@TropicalBabies I'll see what I can manage. The temp's here are now at 107-F. My next door neighbor had a family emergency out of state, so I'm animal sitting for them, along with taking care of mine. By the time 7:00 PM roll's around, I'm pretty much drained from the heat. I do bring a bottle of cold water with me out there though, to stay hydrated.

There was so much tangled grass. Definitely over baseball sized. Probably closer to softball. I'm glad I did it, I was encouraged to try massaging still but there's no way that was going to pass, plus it was starting to ferment I could tell.

Thank you so much for the kind words. I think you could do it. I'm not squeamish really about too much, I've skinned animals, hunted, butchered, etc, but something about a live animal is definitely worse. This wasn't too bad because I knew ultimately I was helping her, so like I was focused on that goal, I was bit nervous at first though. I think another thing that helped was I knew it was like she would die if she didn't have me help so in a way I felt I had no choice and also it was like well if it doesn't go well I know I tried my best.

Awhile back I knicked a sheep when hand shearing and I started freaking out shaking breathing hard, dropped to my hands and knees and almost threw up, and almost fainted too once I got inside lol. It's weird how we process things differently isn't it? Like I've seen a lot and not phased by much but me hurting a sheep accidentally is what makes me almost faint lol. It's the care for the animal that helps us get through these things I think. The things we do for love. :)

And thank you SO much for the info about the "blood eye". That makes me feel better. I may see what other eye drops they might have at the store tomorrow actually while I'm out. I'm also glad you get the vet situation. I'm in a weird inbetween, like I don't consider the chickens pets and I'm not willing to spend loads at a vet to MAYBE save a chicken, but at the same time I do care enough about my animals to try more than purely economical farms would. And yes I do know how some vets are unfortunately. Luckily I just now have a vet I can finally trust, but a past experience really burnt me so I really try to do everything that I can myself.

16.9 fl.oz. bottle. I take one with me when I leave here to go over there, and then I grab another one out of the fridge over there when I'm leaving. They have 2 goat's, 2 dog's, and 11 chicken's.

I notice as I get older and have more time to have a connection to animals I have become more sensitive and less "practical". I also think that my practicing vet on my chickens adds to my knowledge and confidence in care for all my animals. I actually just ordered a microscope so I can do fecal floats... I'm excited!!! I feel I have connected lots of dots so to speak with other other critters because of my chooks. I hope to grow into other areas to help detect health issues early.

Well, I am impressed. Bravo!!! :clap
Your little hen is beautiful BTW. I'm sure her eye will be better in a few. :hugs
