How long do chickens live?

I realize there are a lot of variables but is there a typical length of life? I've got three lovely Buff Orpingtons and just wonder how long we might be able to enjoy those very three...

It is really unpredictable. Assuming totally-perfect protection from predators and healthy living conditions, a lot of chickens make it to 4 or 5, some but not many to 8 or 10, and extremely rare individuals to 15 or more. The oldest chicken I've ever heard of was 20.
