how long do gldn comets lay?

Hey everyone out there. How long do the comets lay? Mine are just over a year old. We heard about 2 years. One has slacked off and might be going into molt. sometimes we get dbl yolkers. We like! How old do they get? I want to keep mine healthy and safe. They are pets too. My little girl can handle them like a doll baby and they let her. I like their personalities.

I am new to them myself, mine are only a week old but I've been reading a lot. Sounds as if they only lay for 2-2.5 yrs. I was wondering myself though if you don't do all the stuff to push them into laying will they lay longer?

yea, I have teaching my husband the original country boy, a thing or two about chickens. He wanted to get more because he thought our yearlings were getting old. I told him that I do no want to clean a chicken house for more than 4 or so hens. Especially in the winter time. FROZEN POOP DON'T SCOOP. I am glad I didn't let him buy more. The spots on the eggs info was helpful from another blog. My eggs have had that on them for a while. I might back off the oyster shell. They must be doing fine. Chickens are born with approximately 3000-4000 ovum in their one functioning ovary (the other one atrophies and dies with no ovum in it). They will lay eggs till all those are gone. A lot of folks say that they only have about 3 years of laying eggs, but I am thinking that is more like 3 years of "good laying" where you get your 5 or so eggs a week. As they get older, they start to lay with larger intervals between them, and thier egg quality decreases - thinner shells, weaker membranes... things of that nature.

Chickens can live into the double digit time frame in years, but you just have to take care of them to make sure they do.
