How long do I really stay out of incubator?

Take them out as soon as they are dry. Incubator temperature is too high for chicks that have already hatched. They can get dehydrated and get pasty butt. Last spring I kept a chick with a navel problem in the incubator for 2 days so the rowdy ones in the brooder wouldn't peck at it, and its butt got sealed shut. Had to soak the hard poop plug and give it a good butt bath so it could poop again (it turned out fine after that and grew into a gorgeous and very delicious cockerel).

Still air incubators suck, I agree about that, and can have impressive temperature differences from one area to another. I only have access to a still air, but I make it work with a small handheld fan to get the air moving in there and mix it more evenly.

I take mine out once they've fluffed up a bit, usually around 12 hours after they emerge. I don't hold to 24 hours. Mine finish drying best out of the higher humidity of the incubator.
Be careful that if you do open it after some more have pipped, you throw a wet/very warm paper towel or sponge in it and close it asap. It will prevent harm from the humidity dropping and shrink wrapping those pipped chickies. I also always make sure during hatching that I am adding warm water and not room temp or cold, as I've seen drops of 8-9% humidity with adding room temp water.
