Actually DH had them when we got married, and that was in 1993.

He has been raising chickens and or ducks since he was a kid. I would say about 30 years - he is 39 now

I chose 11-15 years, because I wasn't very involved for awhile (I was a city girl!),we did spend a few years chickenless, though!

We inherited a small flock of 24 in August of this year. Hope to add some more in the early Spring...we've been checking out the for sale board already in anticipation!

We started out 5 years ago with 4 bantam chickens for my son, who had just joined 4H. He was 9 yrs old. He is now 14 yrs and has 17 bantam showbirds. He has bred and hatched his own chicks and shows at fair and other poultry shows. And I figured since we had to build a coop anyway, we really should get some layers. I won 3 banty RIRs at a poultry show 5 yrs ago, my son bred and showed them for a few years, and I still have 1 hen left. And now I have 30-40 layers and 3 roosters. As a matter of fact, I just bought a walk-in chicken coop today...can't wait to get it put up and I think we are going to use it as a breeding pen. Need..more..chickens!

I have had chickens now for 1 year and 4 months. I never ever thought chickens were so much fun till I got the chance to see someone raise an orphan newborn chick and find out how friendly they can be. It was like: I GOTTA try this, so snatched a newborn chick from a hen ......and the rest is history. Chickens are SO MUCH FUN! Adult Barbie dolls....

to your Uncle Tom. is he still with us?

Unfortunately not...He passed about 15yrs ago. He is sorely missed.

Over twenty years. I didn't have any from 2005 until this year due to a divorce and move to the city but this year I started a new, urban flock, plus meaties for the first time.
I've also had peafowl for at least 15 years, guineas, quail and ducks. I really miss the peafowl and guineas but they wouldn't work sowell on a 1/2 acre city lot.
