How long have you had chickens?

1 year

DH's grandma always had chickens though and so did my grandma. So we both have always been around them. We live on a farm and I wanted something to teach the kids responsibilty. Chickens are great!

I grew up with chickens...up until I was in high school...but as an adult...I have had my chickens since last october....

I first got layers about 35 years ago. I couldn't afford to buy a place of my own, so I was sharing a rented farmhouse with a friend or two. We could have dogs, cats, horses and any other livestock we wanted. Plus gardens. One roomie decided to raise pigs one year. It had one of those classic old hen houses, painted with the same red paint as the barn. So, we had chickens, too. They were white chickens.

I got into a variety of breeds around 20 years ago. That's when I first raised some for meat, too. I had a lot more chickens then, of many breeds and sold eggs. People enjoyed the different colors of eggs and knowing the chickens were running free on pasture, even back then.

There have been times when I didn't have chickens because of the circumstances I was in. I've had multiple flocks over the years, though. It's like having dogs. I like having dogs, so most of my adult life, I've had dogs. I just like having chickens. Sometimes I have more, sometimes less, sometimes I have more variety in breeds, sometimes less. I always like having chickens, though.

One year here on May 8th.

Never lived anywhere that was not on a block. Remarried and live in the boonies.....my DH mentioned wanting to maybe get chickens and we went and looked and came home with 29 Straight Run chicks....and you know what that means!!! Roosters......

Now I have an incubator and a hatch due anytime now!

I grew up on a farm and we raised all kinds of animals. Then after I got married 13 years ago my hubby had goats and I had horses and that was about it. Then the kids came along and one day my hubby said "You know what I have lived on a farm all my life and I have never kept chickens." "You've raised them why don't we get a few, the kids would love it." So now we have 35 adults and 27 chicks. I did not have ducks as a kid (except for some adult muscovies my brother kept once) but now the kids have two ducklings. We also have adopted some rabbits and raised some babies.

Since October 2010 - DH came home with some from our local feed store and I was ticked. Now we have 12 new babies and I want MORE!!

4 months now. My SIL brought us a chick for Christmas. I said " what am I going to do with this"? I now have a wonderful coop and run and have 3 chickens. I love them.
