20 years (since I was 4), the last 8 I have been actively showing. I just got into the Langshans recently and have found my breed. My fiance fully supports what I do, so I intend on breeding/showing for the next 60 years or so!

ETA: I've had birds since I was 4, didn't have a rooster until I was 6 and able to fight him off. Some people are scarred for life by an attacking rooster, others use the legs that God gave them.

My chicken journey started when I was around two years old and my dad kept the incubator and the box of baby chicks in my room. Was a big room in an old frame house in West Texas. From that point on I have always had chickens in one way or another. Bought breeder stock, bought hatchery stock, you name it Ive done it. Sold eggs as a kid and helped my dad butcher about 150-200 fryers each year to put in the freezer. Started raising bantam varieties when I was in Junior high/high school for my FFA project. Still had a few off and on even in college but got back into it seriously raising bantams during the early to mid 90s. It is an affliction for me, not something I can or ever want to get rid of. My dad, grandpa and great-grandma were and are just as chicken crazy as me so you could say they were my enablers for most of my life also.

I started out in 2007 when I purchased a flock of Ancona ducks and Pilgrim Geese. I had Black, Lavender, Chocolate, and this Fawn color that I never knew what it was. then early 2008 I moved and when I did I got rid of the geese and just did ducks. I don't think it was until spring 2008 when I bought my first "Americanas" and that is how the chickens really started. 2009-early 2010 is when I got interested in showing so I got some Bantam Ameraucanas in January of 2010 and I've had them ever since and I absolutely love them and they are going to be the breed I focus on for a long time to come. It will be 4 years this July that I have done this. I started when I was 12.

I'm 45 years old and have had chickens all my life other than a few short periods of time when I was living in town or was moving.

My Grandmother let me have a small flock of my very own as far back as I can remember. We have somewhere between 250 and 300 chickens on the farm right now, and over the years I've had flocks as small as a dozen of a single breed and as high as several thousand birds of many different breeds. I do prefer large fowl over bantams as a general rule, and tend to like multi colored, speckled and spangled birds and old time breeds.
I've also had cage birds, ratites, waterfowl, peafowl and other birds over the years.
If it has feathers I like it... except for _______ & _____ _____!
