How long will it take for rat poison to break down and become safe in a dead rat? Another words, for how long rat poison would be still dangerous for any animal (e.g chicken/dog) eating dead rat remains?
How I understand secondary poisoning, it depends on (1) the type of poison (2) whether a rat or mouse is ingesting it due to amount of poison in the rodent liver (3) whether any undigested poison is in the mouth or stomach (4) whether the animal eating the poisoned rodent consumes the liver where the poison ends up.
All that is way too much for me to contemplate. I simply do not use rodent poison. I use roller bucket traps which I find highly effective. At worst, my chickens eat the peanut butter bait off the roller and I need to keep putting fresh on every night. But I don't need to worry about them getting poisoned.
the problem I have had with any kind of traps/baits in composting scraps chicken run - the rats just ignore them. I may try them again now there is less food in the run (chickens were killed by bobcat a month ago).
