How long to continue scaly leg mite treatment?

So I understand that it takes at least 3 months for the scales to look better. So how will I know if the treatment actually worked until then? I don't want to treat them and wait a couple of months only to find it didn't do anything.

It's hard to tell.
Just push the petroleum jelly up under the scales once a week for 3 weeks or so.
That should suffocate any live or freshly hatched SLM.
Then you'll have to wait.
SLM is not really a dire issue.

The first thing you'll notice, they aren't getting any worse.

They will gradually look improved. There's no way it's not going to help.
