How long to continue scaly leg mite treatment?

So I understand that it takes at least 3 months for the scales to look better. So how will I know if the treatment actually worked until then? I don't want to treat them and wait a couple of months only to find it didn't do anything.

It's hard to tell.
Just push the petroleum jelly up under the scales once a week for 3 weeks or so.
That should suffocate any live or freshly hatched SLM.
Then you'll have to wait.
SLM is not really a dire issue.

The first thing you'll notice, they aren't getting any worse.

They will gradually look improved. There's no way it's not going to help.

It weird that some of you didn't have scaly leg mites that spread. ive had this in my coop for three months and despite treatment other birds are getting them. it's gone through about 9-10 of other birds and the scales will go back down if caught super early. because some had slightly lifted scales and after one treatment with the udder balm I used they looked completely normal the next time, but Ive learned that they have to be treated every 3-4 days... if I go any longer like 5 days without using Vaseline they start to spread again. Ive also had success with soaking feet in flea and tick shampoo with some birds...but the birds that are severely infected are definitely the culprits even though their feet have improved immensely in the last three months. I also know they aren't gone because I find one bird a week that has slightly lifted scales, but I've tried everything but dipping their feet in alcohol....so I may have to try to this next.
