How long do the chicks have to be under the heat lamp?

They are in our basement where the thermometer(not the one in the brooder) reads 70 degrees nearly all the time! I am trying to figure out how long I have to be terrified of a light being on 24/7 in my home! lol lol

By the time they are about 6 weeks old they can be in 70 degrees without a lamp any more. 1st week = 95 degrees, and drop 5 degrees each week.

Why are you worried about the light? If it is a heat light you should have it properly secured so you will not have to worry. I am assuming you are worried about fire and not your electric bill? Now THAT is what I fear!!! Terri O
