How Many Chicken Owners Live in Urban Neighborhoods?

I have found if I give them some interesting treats in the mornings they seem to be busier and less noisy. And only two are noisy. The other two are quiet. I know which two may go if I have any complaints.

We have a 1/2 area lot in an old neighborhood with no deed restrictions/HOA outside the city. It's kind of a rural area. Neighborhoods mixed with farms that have cows and horses. I have a hen house with a small run and 11 hens, no roo in our fenced backyard. I've had chickens for a few years now and no one has said a word. My girls are only noisy when they sing their egg song. I have neighbors on both sides and behind us. What's funny is I hear a rooster crowing in the neighborhood and saw him walking the neighborhood one time. He has been around for months now. No idea where he came from but guess no one cares.

Thanks everyone. Lots of good feedback. Feeling a bit better. I will say my 8 year old son was a catalyst in getting the chickens. We made the mistake of going on a chicken coop tour last summer throughout or city and realized that they good be a great addition to our yard (my garden and landscape) and family. We are already attached to our baby girls and would hate to see them go. It might not be anything to worry about and why worry before I need too? (Because I'm really good at it) I know I'm breaking the rules, but it's hard to continue to follow when so many don't.

Leah21, I want bees also. But I guess that's another thread.

I just took pics for you to see where we are placing it. This pic shows you the coop between the two trees and the back fence (grumpy neighbor). Most of the view going to happy chicken neighbor.

This pic shows the coop from my back fence (grumpy neighbor fence). They won't even see it especially with my apple tree hanging to the ground with apples. Fence on right side is happy chicken neighbor.

This one shows how we placed it between two trees, view from our back porch area

Another of it between trees

So we have tried to keep it away from everyone and big rock pile will smooth out after we finish. I hope they appreciate that.

We're on a liitle more than an acre, but the majority of the neighborhood have much smaller lots, 1/4 Ac or less. No HOA, older neighborhood. Near DFW airport, so the planes drown out the birds. ;)

Really, it's very quiet, but everyone else around us has dogs that bark, so no complaints on the chickens. We have gotten better about remembering to lock up the coop before the late news, or else the roo crows at 10:30-11pm when we disturb his beauty sleep.

Another neighbor kind of catty-corner behind us has a few hens, too. Most folks have no idea.

Hi and Welcome,
I live in Sioux Falls, SD population around 180,000 and you would be surprised to know how many people in town have chickens in their backyard. There are quite a few here. Even though I have a privacy fence no one seems to care, they are more curious to how are they going to survive like only people that live on farms can manage chickens. I am a first-time chicken keeper and I thought they would make some noise, but really they are not loud at all. I only have five, but its no worse than have dogs barking. My chicks are pretty quiet really and they are so great to have... I wish I would've done it sooner. Hope this helps

We live in a suburban neighborhood with less than 1/2 acre (no HOA) which does permit chickens (and roosters). We have 2 bantam pullets, 2 bantam cockerels, and 7 standard pullets. We have had no issues thus far. Our neighbors are fine with it - and one next door neighbor has 6 standard pullets. Another neighbor a few houses down has 5 pullets. We clean the coops, daily. -scoop the lawn and water down any droppings at the end of the day. -no mess, no odors. We do bring the 2 cockerels into the utility room from 6 AM to 8 AM every morning so as not to disturb those around us. (city does have a noise ordinance) -kind of feels odd to walk out back every morning, water the flowers, check the container garden, let out the chickens, and gather the eggs. -country in the city!

Your coop isn't even close to her yard, the old bat!! You could always get a couple of large barking dogs to get her mind off the chickens! Let them out at 8am, bring them in at 11pm, and you've not broken any HOA rules, either.

PS Nice looking coop and yard!

We do have dogs, two border collies and my neighbor on the other side has two german shepherds. They too have a dog, but once they complained about my dog barking I let them know that their dog also barks when they leave her outside when they go to church. They denied it. "Not our dog!" Yup. And we added the fence on our side because their dog would jump into our yard. Oh they complain about everything. When we remodeled our back yard she complained that the weeds from our yard seeded her yard. Our cherry tree died, granted it was 30 yrs old, and she complained about how we killed that. They put up a new fence without discussing it with us, a different section, and then tried to bill us for half. I so wish she had her stupid Ethel Merman singing bird still. I wouldn't worry then.
Thanks on the PS :)
