Sad news. My 86 new chicks arrived from the hatchery all safe and sound and energetic on Mon. I realized I didn't place the waterer in an ideal location, so I moved it. I was absolutely certain there were no chicks under the new location. Ran my hand under before placing the waterer. Next time I filled the waterer, sure enough, one squashed baby chick. They move so fast. They are so delicate. You'd thing there would at least be an uneven bulge under the waterer. But not at three days, I guess.
Then Mon. night, day one, there was a thunderstorm that took the power out for too long. Out of 85, I had 24 laying prostrate and looking dead. But from my childhood, I remembered that a kitchen oven can do wonders. Of the 24, we saved all but 5. For this we are grateful. The miracle of life, the will to live are truly amazing!
Two of my June hatch have died from heat. We're keeping fresh water out and they have shade. Other than bringing them inside, I can't think of anything else to do.
Wait, yes I can... I'll go get a mister, that might help.
