how many chickens does it take....

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Buff Orps, Black Australorps, Silkies, Mille Fleur d Uccles, and Cochins...I'm adding about 10 new breeds this time (3 incubators will be packed!) so I can let you know about the others!!

I just looked at the pic again and noticed the seabright in the back right I didn't see before.

That little roo you were asking about may also be 1 of her OE's, so disregard what I said and see what she says it is. They kinda look alot alike to me.

Hmm..

Well, so far my experience is anything you hatch or get as day olds will be like that. My girls are worse than dogs! If they are free ranging and see me outside, they all come running, and then follow me around.

My kids tried to have a picnic this fall and had one chicken begging for their pizza. LOL! Poor kids!

Anyway, the chicks I got at 3wks have never really liked me, and I've TRIED. But they just don't care.

A lot depends really on what you want out of them. My RIRs are nice, sweet girls and lay terrific eggs. My BRs are a mixed bunch, all sweet, one slightly aggressive, one friendly-to-the-point-of-driving-me-crazy (tried to perch on my 3yos shoulder.. didn't go so well).

My bantam cochin cockeral is so sweet, I want another! My d'Anvers are my fav by far, and my little hen Jane acts like a kitty. Loves to be petted, follows me around, comes if I call her. Overall a terrific girl. (she's also a house chicken.. LOL!)

Good luck.. we wanted to start with 2 (then 3 in case of loss) originally, too. Right now I have.. um.. 17 grown or nearly grown, 16 eggs in the bator.. and another six sent in the mail today..

Chickens rock.. wait 'til you get them. And I agree with silkiechicken, the 17 I have aren't any harder than the 10 ladies I started with.. and all are WAY easier than the dogs or the cats. I go out twice a day for eggs and to open/close. Check the feed then, check water. Once a week I refill feeder, and stir litter or add more. THAT'S IT. It's maybe.. 1/2 hr a week tops (more like 2hrs a week in the summer.. because I like to sit out and watch them LOL!)

two hens?
you might be able to do it if you have incredible willpower.
when these folks talk about chickens as an addiction and this board as a community of enablers they ain't kidding!
a month ago i would have laughed at the idea but i actually ordered an incubator last week!

two hens?
i dare ya!

regarding breeds. i'm lovin' my silkies but all of the breeds people have been talking about are lovely and gorgeous. maybe you could visit a chicken show or a swap or even someone's farm if they have a variety of breeds.

happy chicken procurement!

Frank is an OEGB. I agree with Queen and Silkie, I use the same size feeders and waterers for this flock of 17 that I would use for 2 or 3 chickens. Takes no longer to care for them daily-just check and scoop feed and change water as needed.
Here is a pic of Frank- I just love showing him off- pardon me.

LOL It's okay, nccatnip! I have an OEGB roo and 2 hens but they're really flighty...God forbid they let me take a picture! He is gorgeous, though!!

As far as enablers...I'm proof...Joined this forum...Ended up buying 3 incubators and about 10 dozen hatching eggs! If I'm addicted I'm going ALL OUT!! (I have another 1.5 acres just SITTING here...may as well use them!!)
