We bought two adult ducks this year, but I'd like to try raising one or two from ducklings to add to our mini-flock. As they are pet ducks (and will be given a lot of attention), I naturally want them to be very friendly.

Would it be recommended to buy one or two ducklings? Would having just one (and providing it with a mirror and a lot of attention) potentially make for a more friendly duck? Does raising two diminish their friendliness to humans at all?

Thanks for the advice!

Ducks are social creatures. Do not get just one duckling. I've raised one by itself and they are very dependent on humans and call for you all the time. I only raise one by itself if I have to. Having two of them will not make them any less social towards you if you give them the attention. Mine always run towards me when they see me coming and there is 7 of them in that group.

Please get at least two ducklings; three if there is room. Ducks are not "pets" as far as cats and dogs go. We hatched two from an incubator this spring and they go everywhere together, along with their mother. As they age, ducklings naturally develop into independent animals and most will not "come when called" or sit on your lap like a dog or cat. Using treats, talking to them, slow movements will keep your ducks from being "flighty" meaning they won't waddle away from you. Remember they are prey animals and use their flight instinct when startled. I am telling you this because I have heard a lot of people saying, "I raised my duck from a day old duckling and it won't sit on me or let me hold it." It's just a duck being a duck.
