So far today, I have only gotten 2 eggs out of 12 pullets. The tips of my roo have fallen off from frostbite and there is blood splatters everywhere so that might have the girls traumatized. I am sooo worried about him but I've done all that I know to do for him.
UPDATE: He is not bleeding from the tips, they are fine. He is bleeding from the edges of his comb where it connects to his head. Can't find out what to do for him. Freaking me out!!!!!
25 yesterday when we've been getting 19-23 everyday. We have 7 broody/raising chicks right now so that's got our numbers down. That puts us at about 35 laying and a handful more to start. ....plus all the babies coming up.
We started lighting our coop when our numbers drastically fell this fall. Free ride for 50 chickens all winter?....ehhh, no! We added a heat lamp at night when our big mixed roo started getting frostbite. Plenty of air flow...but lots of chickens in there breathing all night. Red, the roo, has a big beautiful comb so don't want him loosing it. The chickens all seem a lot better, and happier, now that the lows at night aren't -12 anymore. Farmers almanac was right! Cold cold cold!!
