How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Got my first "dozen day" today.....12/16. (Which I expect to be the daily average).

Not bad with 2 broodys. There was a line for the three available nests around noon today, and I have one Buff Orpington that INSISTS on laying her eggs in the shavings on the cool ground under the coop.

Good thing I have a rake!

6 Chicken egg's today

It finally cooled off to 104 F later in the day :th

I keep hearing about high temps like this and wondering if anyone has ever hatches eggs just leaving them out in the heat during the day and giving them a hot water bottle or something to keep warm enough at night?

yesterday was a goodday, 6/8, but the last 6 weeks have been spotty. only3 or 4 a day, one hen after another keeps going broody. and since I have no roos their aren't any chicks to raise. hopefully the fall will be better then the summer

Really the egg's need to be covered with the sand out of the sun but at night the temps do not drop much so that is not a worry ......

Never having hatched eggs, I'm about to show off my ignorance. But if you bury the eggs in sand, doesn't that defeat the purpose of the porosity of the shell? Isn't its purpose air exchange between the outside and the embryo? Don't burn me here...I was really just curious.

Surprise! Went out to let the girls out for the day and found 4eggs/14 hens! 3brown/1 white...the surprise has 2 parts, I normally don't find eggs till after lunch and if I had been 5 minutes earlier I probaably would have seen one of my reds laying the egg! When I opened the fence the girls rushed out so fast that I didn't get a chance to count as they went by, went to open the actual coop to let it air out during the heat of the day and found a hen on the nest looking under herself, when she looked up as if to say "hey, who opened the door!" I saw a beautiful HUGE brown egg! And when I reached under her to get it, it was HOT! Can't get much fresher than that! I suspect she is my first layer because the egg was so huge, the other brown eggs are a lot smaller and a shade lighter, but they're starting to catch up! Kind of a cool day! We'll see if my husband finds any eaggs this evening when he tucks them in for the night (I'll be at work)
