Count is down lately.5-7/14. I keep getting one that is very soft shelled. I have oyster shell out and the funny thing is she is laying the soft egg right next to the oyster shell dispenser! Anyone have any ideas?
We had the same problem until about 2 months ago. We had the oyster shell in a separate dispenser and it didn't seem like they were eating it very much. Then, I started mixing the oyster shell directly into the feed. Now the shells are verrrrrry strong!

7/16. Egg count has dropped from 10-15 to 6-8 in the past week. I think it is the decreasing light, so I plugged in my timers for the bulbs and set them to provide about 3 more hours of light per day, some at dusk and some at dawn. I read where they should have 14 hours of light per day, and here in Montana it is getting dark about 7 and light at about 7:30 now. Hope this helps.
Last year our egg production dropped in half about this time of year, so I installed a programmable timer on the light in the hen house. My daughter thought I was a little wacky until a week or so later when the egg count went back up to the previous quotas.

About a month and a half ago our egg production had dropped down to 3/24 (8 of them are pullets who hadn't started laying yet). The older girls were going through molt, so it wasn't too surprising. However, since they were losing so many feathers, we decided to inspect each one and discovered that most of them were infested with mites (in spite of a lot of dust bathing on their part). We decided to treat them all with DE. About 2 weeks later we treated them again and noticed only a few of them had mites and even with them, the infestation was very light. I can't believe how much better their feathers are coming in and our egg production is up to 11/24. There are now a few small eggs each day, so we know that the young'uns are starting to lay. Even the two Easter eggers are now laying! We've only been raising chickens for about a year now, so we're still learning a lot. We had never inspected them for mites, but now we will do so about every other month. In addition to treating them for mites, we've started mixing the oyster shell directly into their feed (see post above) and we also mix in some DE into their feed as a precaution against worms.

Another Russian Orloff chick hatched today and I am as happy as any of my children came in to this world the funny part is the RO's only produce 3 to 4 eggs per week so they go into the incubator as I collect them and I do the same for the Molten Houdan eggs but someone in that coop likes to peck the eggs so there is always a problem child somewhere

Now if the Kaki Campbell's would start producing some eggs so I can do some baking as duck eggs make some great muffins and corn bread
