How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

11 today. I’ve got some issue going on with the leghorns in the separate coop. Going to have to totally clean it out and see if there’s fungus or ?? That may be negatively effecting them. I don’t have time for this! Grr.

Understand that need to go out in the chicken yard in the morning look for hidden nest
they can be maddening at times

How do the other hens get to lay in the broody nest? My broodies have been very unwelcoming to any hen passing by, let alone trying to get into her nest. Do they do a drop and run when the broody leaves for food and water?
They actually squeeze in the nest box next to the broody! I have also seen them in thei nest box when the broody gets out, which is very rarely! I'll try to get a picture next time I see 2 of them in there!

Huh. I get 2 in a box normally enough. And they are too small boxes to do that but they manage! I don’t think they actually both lay while in together - it’s more of who gives up first ends up waiting anyway. Silly chickens.

Lily who goes broody every month gets very witchy - I can’t see her sharing a box for even a moment. Maybe the younger pullets would be ok with it although the 2 that went broody did a lot of growling.

Are your nest boxes kinda on the big size?

I think this is how chicken math really starts!
I believe you are correct. And it doesn't help that they don't lay in the winter after their first so you want to have pullets that start laying in the fall.
I had 2 Salmon Faverolle in my first flock of 12 in 2012, still have one. She's a good chick raiser (shipped chicks) but neither was ever much of a layer. And both thought going broody several times a year was a Good Thing (NOT!) Not on my list for replacement birds.

Angel the separated leghorn did lay but off the roost again and it broke.
How high and what is underneath? I've had a number of night time eggs that were fine (other than the major poop stains sometimes) that dropped 4' into several inches of pine shavings.

Yep, mine do that too. "This is MY favorite nest and I AM going to lay in it so get your butt out or move over because I AM coming in".

I have a sand floor. Angel roosts on the top board about 6’ high. But she had an egg break on a board and the distance it fell was vent high. Every leghorn has had some egg laying issue. That’s why I think they were damaged developmentally due to their stressed early life. My husband is starting to talk about them not being worth the hassle. I’m starting to agree. They’re getting a bit of a lucky break due to the upcoming 3 weeks vacation as I’m not prepared to make any cull decisions right now unless it’s based on illness. Isis isn’t there despite her growths. She’s acting completely normal for the moment except for the not laying.
