YAY, Annie, Maggie & Tawny! You go, girls, WOOT! Bet they all look pretty in their new feathers, too.Today I collected 2 eggs from my 10 layers.
From Oct 20th to Nov 27th I got 0 eggs. Nada. Nil. Zilch. It was a rough molt. November 28th - Dec 4th 1 hen started laying, 5 eggs in 1 week. (Go Annie!) Dec 5th - 12th Maggie joined in and the 2 hens laid a total of 12 eggs in 8 days. December 13th Tawny started laying and I got 3 eggs! Woohoo!
I started cleaning out the nest boxes this morning quick glance thought they were all empty. I hear soft hen chatter and suddenly Annie pops her head out the open top and looks at me confused! Oops! Sorry Annie, I'll come back later![]()
Ooooh, Lacey REALLY didn't appreciate being disturbed then...quite the protest! When I tugged on the last one it felt heavy. Then I heard a squak and whole lot of wing flapping. Sorry Lacey, didn’t see you there.
She didn’t come at me. I was on the outside of the coop she went away from me into the coop.Ooooh, Lacey REALLY didn't appreciate being disturbed then...quite the protest!Mine have glared & grumbled but never flapped at me when I've found them "busy" on the nest, but our nest boxes don't move with them inside either, so guess she was justified!

It didn't sound like she came at you (she's not that kind of girl, right? She didn’t come at me. I was on the outside of the coop she went away from me into the coop.
There is a reason that people who are startled easily are called chickens. She just ran away like the chicken she is. And she came back to lay. She is 1/2 of my currently laying birds. I have 2 girls that are laying regularly and 13 free loaders. Taking the winter offIt didn't sound like she came at you (she's not that kind of girl, right?) just was startled so she flapped, like "Whooaaa, what's happening?
Earthquake! I'm outta here..." Hope she returned soon after and contentedly continued her business!

Have you noticed they are EXTREMELY happy to see you since you’ve been letting them out? After yesterday's disappointment of finding a broken softshell egg under the roost, today was as good as it gets. Seven perfect, clean eggs from my seven chickens.
I've started to let them out to free range for an hour or two in the evenings. I think it makes them happier.
