How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

9 today. 7 in one box, two singletons. Tomorrow getting into single digits, thinking I’m going to add some straw to the run for them to pick through and help warm their feet.
I bet a thick layer of straw will really help keep them warm. We have a bunch of dry leaves in our chicken run, a layer about one foot deep, and the chickens love to dust bathe in them. I took our compost thermometer and tested the ground underneath the leaves on one of our days that was in the single digits, and it was 40°! No wonder they’re always making little craters to lie in!

Mine make quiet nasal noises, almost as if they were geese!

😂 I wonder if that's a Barred Rock thing? My PBR girl Xenobia definitely has a low, nasal voice -- the alto of the flock to Martha's soprano. Quite distinctive, almost honking at times; I can always distinguish her "talking" from the other 7. I might have named her "Olive Oyl" if I'd known her better when she arrived -- when she wants something or is bothered, she makes the chicken version of the cartoon Olive Oyl's worried "Ohhhh! Ohhhh!" sound. On the nest while laying, she makes what we call her "rusty dinosaur" grumble. She's become one of my favorites, a lovely, very mellow & cuddly girl. 🥰

Oh, right: 4 eggs today, Martha's blue, Elsie's green and 2 nice big browns.

After 8 eggless days I got one today. I suspect it is from one of my olive Eggers that have been on break since October

Five today so far. I had to wait for a few minutes, since one of the girls was still in the box finishing up her egg laying routine.

I tossed them a little bit of scratch, then some broccoli and kale to keep them occupied. Might run down to the store this morning to see if there is any banana box chicken food out on the loading dock. All that's left from the last score is a couple pounds of green grapes, and I don't think high-sugar grapes are healthy for the chickens to have every day.
