How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Last night, Goldie, my littlest Banty didn’t go to roost. I spent thirty minutes looking for her by flashlight. A black hen at night…go figure. This morning I let the other three out to free range, because I didn’t want Goldie to be free ranging alone, even though nobody would be home til this afternoon. Got home today and she’s just fine…thankfully! One egg from Flossy in the nest box .

1 today, from reliable Juin :)

Of my formerly four hens, she is the only one that lays nearly everyday without difficulty, and every egg is perfectly formed with a hard shell. I hope my new Dominique, Marzo, is just as healthy and productive when she starts laying too!
Did I miss you mentioning a new pullet, or did I just forget?
My Dominiques are sweet and productive, and I enjoy their soft nasal honking sounds.

Need to update from 4 to 5 eggs today because of a late layer. All 5 were nice AND in the nest box. I rewarded the girls with green weeds and purple salal and Oregon grape berries.

I also refilled their nest box with needles and pollen cones I picked up from underneath a Douglas fir tree. They seem to like the texture of that stuff underneath them when they lay eggs. Looks like this but with a lot more needles...

Yes! I have three chicks (there were four but one passed early on) who I added to the flock in June this year. One of them is a Dominique named Marzo. Here is a picture:

Juin is such a sweet, cuddly thing, and since she doesn’t seem to get on very well with just my Marans after Mei died, I wanted to get her a friend her own size who hopefully won’t pick on her.

I love their little voices too! Both their chick and adult voices are super cute :)

So glad you found Goldie! I’d be so scared if my hens stayed out all night!
