Today 9/22 This morning we were reworking their nest boxes...didn't get finished before we had to leave for my PT session...got home later this evening so will have to finish boxes tomorrow.
Had to do something...had 4 boxes and one larger one for the big ole Buff Orpington gals so they can stand and squat. Well, seems EVERYONE preferred the larger one and would crowd into it no matter how many others were already in the process of laying. At one point yesterday there were 5 hens in that one box...on top of each other...one was my largest BO, Daisy! It was chaos!
8/17 with one of the girls being broody and sitting. Sadly, one of the eggs she was sitting on last night was stolen by some kind of critter who dug under the 1/2 inch hardware cloth that covers the whole tractor and lays out on the ground around it. I feel so badly because we just candled again last night, and we saw a lot of embryo movement from all of the four eggs. One of them is badly cracked and we sealed it over with candle wax, but it is not likely to be successful. The critter didn't even take the doomed one. It took one of the other three.
