2/11 - 5 plus our first soft shell.

It was rather dark in the coop when I collected the last eggs and closed up the girls. I could see an egg in the top nest and reached for it - then then quickly recoiled my hand. I didn't know what I had a hold of but it wasn't like anything I had tried to pick up before. I stepped into the shed part of the coop and got the lantern. It looked like a regular egg so I tried to pick it up again and it felt like jelly with the thinnest of shell holding it all together.

Although the 9 hens have been laying pretty well this first winter, I have recently had one hen who has had a couple of very stressed shelled eggs (looks like they refused in the pipeline before they were actually laid). I think this soft shell may be from the same hen.

20 from our 23 BSL's today. A good day. Dreary though with rainy weather again. Supposed to be back to sunshine tomorrow but wintery mix on Wednesday. Welcome to the NC Piedmont of central NC.

9/9.... on a side note, added the 6 juveniles to the group yesterday and "Barney" the Boss Rooster decided to be very "roosterly" towards me... If I didn't love my daughter... Can you say pastry and chicken...
