How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

yesterday, one egg, from Goldie. Same today, one egg from Goldie.
took a few pix of austra... edited teh best two.

She is the one that is low girl in the pecking order.
I think it may be a few days or so before she lays another egg.

Today was our first ever 4 egg day, everybody contributed. The two older girls had taken a few months off for winter, the younger ones just started up mid winter. All are columbian wyandottes, but not pure breed (two of them have single combs, one has mossy feathering, sort of looks half way between columbian and silver laced).

Tessa, who laid the whiter colored egg, sometimes lays darker, smaller ones. Tends to have calcium deposits on the egg, and they are often a bit squished or asymmetrical- she has a severe wry tail, so laying could be a bit difficult. But she has a bright, chipper personality.

Goldie is our alpha, but she had been really weak, pale and shaky a couple weeks ago, comb and wattle drying up and faded. We realized her upper beak had grown a bit long, overhanging the lower in a hook, and that made it very hard for her to eat. She would stand back nervous while the others ate, and she wouldn't drink. We trimmed the beak back so it was even, and within two days we saw improvement. Now she is perky, good posture, shiny feathers and she laid her first egg since November, a real big one. (she spent at least two hours on the nest box).

3/3 again! My girls are certainly on form at the moment - that's 6 days out of the past 7 that I've got 100%

In fact it's put me in such a good mood that I've ignored the mass escape that they've engineered twice today. Over 1000 m² of back garden isn't enough for 3 chooks - Rusty's shown the others how to cut around the fence, over the stone wall, and explore the front garden. I herded them back in this morning, but they were all out again this afternoon - I think there's something different growing in the grass there that they're desperate to eat. It's either clover or moss - whichever it is I'm not complaining if they want to remove it for me

Does she have white ear lobes? Is she a cross?

If by ear lobes, you man those light circles on her neck?
They look white.
And, is possible she is a cross.
came with many many others of all kinds, from the feed store last year.

I had a buff Cochin, but sad to say she passed on.

I was just curious as I would like to have a couple white egg layers but am not sure if Leghorns really fit the bill for me. It is odd how white eggs are the standard in the US but there really aren't that many breeds that lay white eggs.

I have five layers and most days I get 5 eggs. My Barred Rock lays three days and takes a day off. She has done this since she began laying. The others are pretty steady only missing an occasional day here and there. They all lay different shades of brown with the Barred Rock being the lightest and the Black Australorp being the darkest. I have four more who should start laying anytime now. Hopefully the EEs will lay blue/green eggs for some color.

Things a starting to get hot and heavy in the egg production area here. I have 13 layers. I've been getting 9 to 12 everyday. 1 day last week we got 14 out of 13 layers. One of the girls was doing double duty

WHITE earlobes!

I wonder about that as I only have 5 hens and get about 7-8 different color combos The BO is very consistent but my Brahmas have speckled eggs sometimes and other times no speckles. I think it depends on how fast things proceed. I have caught them laying and can now tell who's it is based on size/ shape.

Me too. One of the Chanteclers lays an egg the same color as the bigger Black Australorp. But it isn't hard to tell a 47 gram (on average) egg from a 65 (on average) egg

Laura's egg yesterday was 48, Zorra's was NINETY! We gave her the day off today. OK, she TOOK the day off, but we'll pay her anyway. She deserves a break after that.

Congrats! I'm still waiting for my first 100% day. But with the broodies busted and the longer daylight hours, I can hope it will be soon, right?

Good catch on the beak. I just read about trimming beaks recently. Wouldn't have even known to look for such a thing. BYC is SO informative.

Def a cross. BAs do NOT have white earlobes. And AFAIK, chickens with white earlobes only lay white or cream eggs
OK, now we believe you, your black chicken that looks a LOT like a Black Australorp, lays white eggs. You may step down from the witness stand, the interrogation is over.

Sorry about the Cochin.

6 yesterday, including Zorra's monster.
7 today. Which is good. Hard to sell your spare dozen when you can't close the carton!
