How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

1 egg today from 2 hens. yesterday i got 2 eggs! i feel like i have such a small flock compared to some of you! darn my small coop!

The pecking order got established fairly quickly... the boss hen from the old set and new set squared off pretty aggressively; but after about an hour, my rooster (already here) stepped in and put both of them in their places!

Friday after I posted, I went back out to see how the integration was coming... Two newbies had laid- both in the laying boxes at that! Today all 3 of my original flock layed as usual, plus one newbie, again all in the laying boxes. I guess I am an exception to the rule, but I have never had an egg laid other than where they should be.

On a side note, I had also picked up 6 new hens for a friend, and had kept them in the crate until he returned yesterday afternoon. Two laid (in the crate of course) Friday afternoon, and two Saturday morning. Got them to his place about 4:00pm, and one laid an hour later. He sent me a message that one had laid this morning while we were all at church. The good part of the story is that while this is his second flock... these are his FIRST eggs. His first flock were some birds that were past laying age (from one of the people who obviously will take advantage of unknowing newbies). He didn't get an egg for six months, then lost all of them to predators.

Congrats! So much for that "change throws them off" thing

Well, I discovered another hiding place.
So I got 21 eggs today.

Whoa, do you trust them all to be good? How do you know how long they've been in that nest?

Uh... I am guessing this is an April fools joke. You have April 2 in the chart, but today is April 1.

No, Gifa's girls toe the line and are so predictable she can forecast what time each will lay a couple of days out. The rows in blue are predictions.

Tomorrow i have to drive 70 miles to return the trailer I rented...

OUCH! Dare I guess the mini donkeys also came from 70 miles away?

10 eggs today .... if I get to count this tiny little thing I found in the run:

It weighs all of 8 grams. The blue one next to it is 58 grams. I have 2 girls that lay white and there was only one white egg in the nest boxes today.

I think it is retribution for the early lock down last night. Put them in with their scratch at 5 PM but it doesn't get dark now until after 7. They scarfed the scratch up pretty quickly and then there was a fair bit of what I though was squabbling. I told them to cut it out and settle down then figured out they weren't fussing at each other. I think if they had tin cups they would have been raking them back and forth across their "cell bars" and I don't think I could put here what I think they were saying.

Thanks, Bruce... Yeah, I'll update tomorrow. I try not to post a new chart every day, or more than once each page, and we've had an interesting couple of days here at chateau gifa... The girls are all fine, and trucking right along...but The old dishwasher is in time out on the back patio while the new dishwasher is giving it shiny expensive looks from the hole out of which it came... Finally... You know how it is installing standard appliances in non-standard houses and all...

Well, I need to take a picture of todays 2 eggs.
the weather got a bit cold,a nd the hens spent some of the day up on their roost.
And Austra laid one maybe the size of a larger pigeon egg
will weigh both and take a picture...

I got ten eggs from 9 girls. The last one did not have a shell. It was a very large egg with a yolk, ablumen and membrane, but no shell. It felt really weird and squishy like a water balloon. I thought the poor girl who laid it was coming down with something. She was puuffed up. Her wings droop and she barely moved. When she finally moved away from the spot she had been hovering in there was the rubber egg.

I offer oyster shell free choice for my ladies, but if I feel like their shells are getting thin, I sprinkle a handful or two in the tray of their feeder.

In theory, Yolanda's already laid her egg... But she's been a little off since the 30th, so, we'll see. I actually haven't been out there yet today... It's 9am... I'll be going out there now to tidy up in there.

So, yeah... my going out there interrupted little Yolanda, she was still on the nest, until that handful of scratch hit the ground. But after scooping the coop, making sure their water was clean and their feeder full enough...and after paying some attention to the poor neglected dog next door (some kind words, scratches behind the ear and a yummy little piece of bacon), she was right back in the nest again. So, she'll lay in the next 30 minutes or so. So, I'll update the chart to reflect that.

Hello All! I recently had to administer antibiotics to my flock, the last day was 03/19, so it is almost three weeks since then, in the meantime I have been keeping good count of how many eggs I am not able to use each day (because of the antibiotics) and I am wondering how many eggs I SHOULD expect to see every day out of 14 birds? Some days I have 8, some days 10 - 12, once or twice I got 14 exactly. 9 of my girls are a little more than 12 months old now, then I have 5 white leghorns that are about 7 - 8 months old.

I am not totally convinced until I hear from some of you long timers but I am beginning to wonder if neighborhood kids are stealing eggs from me. I have my coop latched up high for exactly that reason because our property is not fenced (yet) but my run gate is latched lower and accessible to small hands, but I couldn't imagine they would crawl in thru the chicken door?! Would they?

Any help would be great!
