23/30 the sick lady is now ok so we back to 30 laying ladies

Only 5 today, but one of them was the first egg from a pullet from my summer hatch. They are 22 weeks old. I was a little disappointed by the color, but it was a nice New Year's surprise nonetheless.

Cold here. I looked out just after the door opened and there were NO birds in the run. Very strange. They usually burst out the door when it opens.
I stepped outside and said "Aha that's why they're inside!" (It was in the teens and windy.....I don't blame them one bit!).

I only have 3 hens but still get 3 a day so far. I have 26 newbies that should be laying by March.

Wow, we are all doing the same stuff in this cold! It sounds like we are all taking good care of our flock!

Thanks for all the condolences! We are still working on re-homing the livestock.

CoChix~ Alfalfa Hay around here could be used at currency it is so expensive, and valued. We only had to put up 2 tons, and it was $230 a ton for straight alfalfa. How much is it in Colorado?

I tarped the chicken run, and the duck run. My 3 ducks get a heat lamp, because they were miserable, shivering and would only walk a few feet before laying down. I was keeping them in one section of the hen house all night without food and water like the chickens, but they were coming out in the morning shivering and not walking very far. So I stapled clear plastic on their run, which has a shelter, put down additional pine shavings, and have their heated water bowl and food situated for easy cleaning in there. They are now being locked in their run at night and are so happy, and no more shivering. They can drink, eat, take a bath, sleep,and stay warm. Happy girls!

I put a "warming station" in the hen house for daytime use. I have a heat lamp in one corner that they can get under and warm up anytime they want in the day. It doesn't change the temp by more than a couple of degrees in there though because it is an 8 x16 building. But, they seem happy to have a place to warm up.

Do most people's chickens lay somewhat consistent within a time frame?
Mine is an all day event.
Example today
1 at 6am
2 at 7:30
4 at 8:30
1 at 10:00

I have read that they lay every 25 hours or so... The off days must be when the lay time falls after dark? Over the summer and fall, each hen laid around the same time, but it was an all day event. Since each of my hens has a particular look to her eggs (subtle color, size and shape variances) it was easy to tell who laid once she was identified. Once the weather is again tolerable... I'll be outside for several days to check their rhythms. Hehe... I should actually put note to paper!

Today, I got my 2 eggs (70.7/65.3) before 8am. One was cold-ish, one was still warm. Hoping for a three egg day, my new layers have already delivered and the older 2 layers are each giving one every other day.

2/4/8 plus a new cockerel that the girls seem to be happy with.

Just had two over really easy for breakfast. YUM!
