13/27 steady as she lays.... here's 25 white rock pullets and 2 wht. roos hatched on 2/25/15.... not sure of how many of the leghorns an blk. Wyandotte's i am going to keep as these become the new egg layers. there's 18 leghorns an 9/10 blk. Wyandotte's, most likely keep half of each as there good layers.

8 today. Spring has definitely not come to St. Louis. we are getting a lot of snow & cold temps!

We have about 6 inches on the ground up here now and apparently about 20 hours to go before it stops.

WOW!!!!!! Thank you so much for the information on this breed, it is fascinating and I am definitely interested in them. I read it to my husband and he said that picking the rooster for Christmas dinner in Spain is like how we pick live lobster out of the tank in America!

I'm so glad there are other choices for chocolate eggs! Chocolate egg layers are on my list for next years layers, so I need to hatch some this spring or summer. I imagine they do OK in cold climates as long as you have a well insulated coop with ventilation like I have. My Leghorns did fine and they are a Mediterranean bird with a big comb too, none of them got frostbite.

DP is dual purpose. So they're a pound or two heavier than the other 3 varieties.
We get very cold and very hot and always with high humidity. It can range from -20 to 112 though usually not so extreme. It did get to -19F last winter when the cocks got some pretty bad frostbite. About 3 years ago it stayed above 100 for a long time and I lost a welsummer to heat but the Penedesencas did just fine. It was close to 100 when I took the picture of the rooster with it's mouth open.

I did not know that St. Louis was plagued with such crazy weather. It seems like you get the Artic blasts from Canada, the snow affect from the Great Lakes, and the relenetless heat and humidity from the south!!!

Thanks for the quote directions! I feel that I would save a lot of space by multi-quoting, but could never get it to work, because I was doing it wrong.

I am not surprised that Washington State has extra import laws. Darn, does this mean I have to find a breeder in Washington, or someone who also has the Avian Flu certification to get this breed?

So if you are to far south to get the great lake affect snow, do you get the Pacific dry air once in awhile, the gulf of Mexico humidity and warmth and the East coast cold blasts? We got all of those when we lived in Texas, plus jet stream cold air from Canada once in awhile. I would never have guessed that Texas would be the state with the wackiest weather, but it was! We even experienced a tropical storm in San Antonio in 2009, followed by snow a few months later!!!!!!!!!!

I would get 2 BB Red Old English game hens. They are the size of a Robin, don't eat much and because they are so cute and little, kids don't lose interest in them. Sell it with "they don't eat much" LOL. And yet they lay decent little eggs, perfect sized for a kid to eat!

I can personally vouch for them. Mine is gone now but Sass was awesome. Tiny,sweet and always wanted to be with me.

12 today, the girls are rockin'

...and I have an escape artist...who may have been out all night. I did not go out until late this morning and there she was standing in the driveway just looking at me.
DD thought she heard one under the deck last night, but we check and counted, I thought.

No worse for wear , but this is the 2nd time in a week we thought she was in the nest box when we closed the door. How does she do that? LOL
